Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah commanded the Children of Israel to enter the city gate in humility, prostrating, and saying the word of repentance and forgiveness — "Hittah" (meaning: O Allah, forgive us our sins) — the wrongdoers among them did not merely disobey; they mocked the very command of their Lord. They changed the word they were told to say, twisting it into a jest: instead of "Hittah," they said "Habbah fi sha'rah" (a grain in a hair), ridiculing the divine instruction. Not only did they alter the word, but they also distorted the action: instead of entering the gate in humble prostration, they entered crawling backwards on their buttocks — a complete inversion of the humility Allah required of them.
This shows a profound truth: when a heart is corrupted, it does not stop at one sin. The change of the word was light compared to the change of the deed, and both together revealed their contempt for Allah's command. Their transgression was not ignorance; it was arrogance and mockery of the divine law.
Therefore, Allah — in His perfect justice — sent down upon those wrongdoers a punishment from the sky: a severe plague (ta'un) that swept through them, as a direct consequence of their persistent disobedience and their willful departure from the bounds of Allah's command. This was not a random calamity; it was the natural fruit of their own rebellion, for when a people mock the commands of their Creator and persist in sin, the heavens themselves respond with a warning that shakes them awake.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this story deeply. The Children of Israel were given a simple test — one word and one posture — yet they failed because their hearts were filled with arrogance and mockery. How often do we, too, receive clear commands from Allah — in the Qur'an and the Sunnah — and then seek to twist them, rationalize them, or mock them with our actions? The command to pray, to give charity, to lower our gaze, to speak the truth — do we fulfill these with humility, or do we seek ways to alter them to suit our desires?
This verse is a timeless reminder that Allah sees not only our outward compliance but the state of our hearts. The punishment that descended upon them was not merely physical; it was a sign of Allah's displeasure with those who treat His commands lightly. Yet, Allah is also the Most Merciful — He sent this punishment as a means to awaken them, and He opens the door of repentance to all who turn back to Him sincerely.
Let us be among those who say "We hear and we obey" (Sami'na wa ata'na), not those who twist and mock. For the path of humility and submission leads to Allah's forgiveness and His eternal pleasure, while the path of arrogance and mockery leads only to regret and divine displeasure. Choose today to enter the gate of obedience with a humble heart, and you will find the mercy of Allah awaiting you — a mercy far greater than any punishment, and a peace that no worldly pleasure can match.
