Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Qaryah (هَٰذِهِ الْقَرْيَةَ): The town referred to here is Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), which was the destination of the Children of Israel after their exodus from Egypt.
- Raghadan (رَغَدًا): Abundant, plentiful, and comfortable living—eating freely without restriction or hardship.
- Sujjadan (سُجَّدًا): Prostrating or bowing in humility and submission before Allah. Some scholars interpret it as entering the gate while bowing down in gratitude and humility.
- Hittah (حِطَّةٌ): A request for the removal of sins—literally meaning "relieve us" or "absolve us" of our burdens and transgressions.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah reminds the Children of Israel of His immense favor upon them. After their long journey and deliverance from Pharaoh's tyranny, Allah commanded them: "Enter this town (Bayt al-Maqdis) and eat from its provisions wherever you wish, in abundance and ease." This was a test of gratitude—would they obey with humility or rebel with arrogance?
Allah also instructed them to enter the gate of the town in a state of prostration and humility, not with pride or defiance. They were to say, "Hittah"—meaning, "Our Lord, remove our sins and forgive us." In response, Allah promised: "We will forgive you your sins, and We will increase the reward of those who do good."
This verse carries profound lessons for every believer:
- Gratitude for Provision: When Allah grants us sustenance and opens doors of blessing, we must receive it with thankfulness, not entitlement. The command to eat freely was paired with a command to remain humble—showing that worldly blessings should never lead to arrogance.
- Humility in Worship: The act of entering the gate while prostrating symbolizes that true success comes through submission to Allah. Even in moments of victory and achievement, the believer's posture should be one of humility before the Almighty.
- The Power of Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness): The word "Hittah" teaches us that the key to Allah's mercy is sincere repentance. When we acknowledge our faults and ask Allah to "lift" our burdens, He responds with forgiveness that covers our sins like a veil—this is the meaning of *maghfirah* (forgiveness), which literally means to cover and protect.
- Allah's Generosity to the Righteous: The verse ends with a beautiful promise: "We will increase the reward of those who do good." This is an invitation to excellence (*ihsan*)—to worship Allah as though you see Him, for even if you cannot see Him, He sees you. Every act of goodness, no matter how small, is met with multiplied rewards from the Most Generous.
Dear reader, this verse is not merely history—it is a living guidance for your life today. When you enter your home, your workplace, or any new phase of life, enter with humility, remember Allah, and seek His forgiveness. Eat from His provisions with gratitude, and strive to be among the *muhsinin* (those who excel in goodness), for Allah's promise of increase is certain and His mercy knows no bounds.
Let this verse inspire you to turn to Allah in every moment—thanking Him for His blessings, seeking His pardon for your shortcomings, and striving to perfect your character. For indeed, Allah's door of forgiveness is always open, and His reward for the righteous is beyond imagination.
