Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Mīthāq (ميثاق): A firm, binding covenant or solemn pledge.
  • Ṭūr (الطور): The mountain, specifically Mount Sinai, which was raised above the Children of Israel.
  • Bi-quwwah (بقوة): With strength, seriousness, diligence, and wholehearted commitment.
  • Tattaqūn (تتقون): To be mindful of Allah, to guard against His punishment by obeying His commands and avoiding what He forbade.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Children of Israel, remember and reflect upon that profound moment in your history when Allah took a solemn and binding covenant from you — a pledge to believe in Him alone, to worship none but Him, and to follow His messengers and the revelation He sent down. This was not a casual promise; it was a sacred commitment that carried immense responsibility.

To emphasize the gravity of this covenant, Allah raised the mighty mountain of Sinai high above your heads, casting its shadow over you as a visible, terrifying reminder of His power. It was as if the mountain itself became a witness to your pledge, and you were told: "Hold firmly to what We have given you — the Torah — with all your strength, seriousness, and dedication. Do not take it lightly, do not be negligent or lazy in learning it, preserving it, and acting upon it. And remember what is within it — study its verses, ponder its meanings, and let its guidance shape your words and deeds — so that you may attain taqwa, that beautiful state of God-consciousness that protects you from His displeasure and leads you to His mercy."

This scene was not merely a historical event; it is a timeless lesson for every believer. It teaches us that Allah's guidance is a precious treasure that must be received with earnestness and respect. When we approach the Qur'an — the final and most complete revelation — we too must take it "with strength": reading it with reflection, understanding it with sincerity, and implementing it with love and devotion. The covenant of the Children of Israel was to uphold the Torah; our covenant is to uphold the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah of His final Messenger, peace be upon him.

Dear reader, Allah does not burden us with what we cannot bear. He gave them a visible mountain as a warning, but He has given us something even greater: the mercy of the Qur'an, which He has made easy to understand and beautiful to follow. Let us not be like those who took their covenant lightly and suffered the consequences. Instead, let us embrace this divine gift with open hearts, firm resolve, and a sincere desire to draw closer to our Lord. For when we truly hold onto His guidance with strength and remember what is within it, we open the doors to His protection, His love, and His eternal success — in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 61-65 — Al-Baqarah

And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions." [Moses] said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked." And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allah [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.
Indeed, those who believed and those who were Jews or Christians or Sabeans [before Prophet Muhammad] - those [among them] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness - will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.
And [recall] when We took your covenant, [O Children of Israel, to abide by the Torah] and We raised over you the mount, [saying], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that perhaps you may become righteous."
Then you turned away after that. And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would have been among the losers.
And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the sabbath, and We said to them, "Be apes, despised."
