Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah took a solemn covenant from the Children of Israel and raised the mountain above them as a sign of His power and a warning, they still turned away. They broke their promise, disobeyed His commands, and reverted to their old ways of stubbornness and rebellion. This was not a one-time mistake — it was a pattern of behavior that showed ingratitude and heedlessness.
Yet, despite this grave turning away, Allah did not immediately destroy them or strip them of His blessings. Had it not been for His immense grace and mercy — His kindness in giving them time, His acceptance of their repentance, and His forgiveness of their sins — they would have certainly been among the losers. They would have lost every good thing in this life and faced utter ruin in the Hereafter.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. How often do we, too, make promises to Allah — to pray, to obey, to change our ways — and then turn away? How often do we slip back into sin after knowing the truth? Yet Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not punish us immediately. He gives us chance after chance, opening the door of repentance again and again. He waits for us to return to Him, like a loving parent who never gives up on a child.
This is the beauty of Islam: no matter how many times you stumble, the door of repentance is never closed. Allah's grace is greater than your sins, and His mercy precedes His wrath. So do not despair of Allah's mercy, and do not let your past mistakes define you. Turn back to Him today, for He is ever ready to forgive and to transform your loss into gain. The only true losers are those who persist in turning away and never return.
