Explanation of the Verse:
After mentioning the story of the People of the Sabbath — a community of Israelites who transgressed Allah’s command by fishing on the sacred day, and were transformed into apes as a punishment — Allah says: "So We made it a deterrent for what was before it and what was behind it, and an admonition for the God-fearing."
This means that Allah made that terrible punishment — the transformation of those sinners into despised creatures — a visible, unforgettable lesson for all. It served as a warning to the towns and peoples who were near them, who heard of their fate, and to all those who would come after them in later generations. The message was clear: whoever dares to violate Allah’s boundaries and commit such sins will face a similar humiliation and divine retribution.
At the same time, this event was made a source of guidance and admonition for the God-fearing — those who are conscious of Allah, who revere His commands, and who fear His punishment. For them, this story is not merely a historical account; it is a living reminder that strengthens their faith, deepens their awareness of Allah’s justice, and encourages them to remain steadfast on the path of obedience. It reassures them that they are on the truth and motivates them to persist in righteousness, never straying into the paths that lead to Allah’s wrath.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply on this verse. Allah did not merely narrate a story of the past — He made it an eternal sign, a beacon of warning that echoes through time. If a people who were once favored with divine knowledge and miracles could be transformed into apes for disobeying a single command, then how much more careful should we be in our own obedience to Allah? This verse calls us to a life of mindfulness: to check our actions, to guard our tongues, to protect our hearts, and to never take Allah’s commands lightly. At the same time, it fills the believer’s heart with hope — for the God-fearing are promised safety, honor, and Allah’s special care. Let this story be a mirror for your soul: if you see yourself slipping, return to Allah in repentance before it is too late. And if you are steadfast, rejoice — for your reward with Allah is immense, and His protection is with you. This is the beauty of the Qur’an: it is not just a book to be read, but a guide to be lived. Embrace it, and you will find peace in this life and the next.
