Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Iʿtadaw (اعْتَدَوْا): They transgressed or overstepped the limits set by Allah.
- Al-Sabt (السَّبْت): Saturday, the sacred day on which fishing was prohibited for the Children of Israel.
- Qiradah (قِرَدَةً): Monkeys or apes.
- Khāsiʾīn (خَاسِئِينَ): Disgraced, humiliated, and driven away from Allah’s mercy.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Children of Israel, you have certainly known the fate of those among your forefathers who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath. Allah had commanded them to honor this day by refraining from all worldly work, including fishing. But they devised a cunning trick: they set their nets and dug pools on Friday, then returned on Sunday to collect the fish that had been trapped—thereby violating the sanctity of the Sabbath while pretending to obey it.
When they persisted in this rebellion and mockery of Allah’s command, His punishment was swift and decisive. He transformed them into apes—humiliated, despised, and cast out from the company of the righteous. This was not merely a physical change but a profound lesson: their hearts had already become beastly through their deceit, and their outward form was made to match their inner reality. They were left as a sign for their contemporaries and for all generations to come.
This story is a powerful reminder that Allah is not deceived by outward compliance when the heart is bent on disobedience. He sees through every trick and scheme, and His justice is absolute. The punishment of the Sabbath-breakers was a direct consequence of their arrogance and their attempt to outsmart the divine law—a warning that no one can circumvent Allah’s commands without facing the consequences.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this story stir your heart. The same Allah who transformed those transgressors into apes is watching over you today. He is the Most Merciful, but He is also the Most Just. Do not let the whispers of Shaytan lure you into finding "clever" ways to bend or break Allah’s commands, thinking that you can escape His sight. Every act of disobedience, no matter how well disguised, is known to Him.
Yet, the door of repentance is open. Unlike those who were punished, you have the chance to turn back to Allah before it is too late. The Qur’an is not just a book of stories—it is a living guide, filled with lessons to protect you from destruction and lead you to eternal success. Embrace its teachings with sincerity, and you will find peace in this life and the next. Let the fate of the Sabbath-breakers be a warning, and let the mercy of Allah be your hope.
