Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Baqarah: A cow, specifically one that is not old or too young, but in the middle age.
  • Huzuwan: Mockery, ridicule, or making fun of someone.
  • A'udhu billah: I seek refuge with Allah — a phrase of seeking protection from doing something wrong or sinful.
  • Al-Jahileen: The ignorant ones — those who lack knowledge and wisdom, and here specifically referring to those who mock and jest.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O believers, reflect on this story from the history of the Children of Israel, for it carries profound lessons about obedience, faith, and the dangers of questioning Allah's commands with arrogance.

Recall when Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, said to his people: "Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow." This was not a random or trivial command — it was a divine test, a means to uncover the truth about a murder case among them. But instead of responding with submission and haste to obey, they reacted with stubbornness and defiance. They said: "Do you take us in mockery?" — meaning, are you making fun of us? How can you tell us to slaughter a cow when we asked you about a slain man?

This response reveals their deep-seated arrogance and lack of trust in their Prophet. They failed to understand the wisdom behind Allah's command, and instead of humbly submitting, they questioned and ridiculed. They could not see the connection between the command and the situation at hand, so they assumed Musa was jesting with them.

Musa, peace be upon him, responded with the utmost dignity and piety: "I seek refuge with Allah from being among the ignorant." He did not retaliate with harsh words or anger. Instead, he distanced himself from their foolishness, affirming that mocking people is an act of ignorance, and a true prophet of Allah would never engage in such behavior. He sought Allah's protection from falling into the very trait they accused him of.

Lessons and Reflection:

This verse teaches us several vital lessons:

  1. Obedience precedes understanding: When Allah commands something, the believer's first response should be "We hear and we obey," even if the wisdom behind it is not immediately apparent. The Children of Israel delayed and questioned, and as a result, their task became more difficult — as we will see in the following verses.
  2. The danger of arrogance: Their question "Do you take us in mockery?" stemmed from pride. They thought they were too important to receive such a command. Arrogance blinds the heart and prevents it from submitting to Allah's will.
  3. The character of the Prophet: Musa's response is a beautiful example of how a believer should react to mockery and accusation — with patience, dignity, and by seeking Allah's refuge, not with anger or retaliation.
  4. Mockery is ignorance: Making fun of others, especially of divine commands or religious matters, is a sign of ignorance and foolishness. The wise believer takes everything from Allah and His Messenger with seriousness and respect.

Dear reader, let this story inspire you to examine your own response to Allah's commands. When you hear the call to prayer, when you are asked to give charity, to fast, to pray, to lower your gaze — do you rush to obey, or do you hesitate, question, and delay? The key to success lies in immediate, sincere submission. Allah tests us not because He needs our obedience, but because He wants to purify our souls and elevate our ranks. So be among those who say, "We hear and we obey," and you will find peace in this life and the next.

They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is." [Moses] said, "[Allah] says, 'It is a cow which is neither old nor virgin, but median between that,' so do what you are commanded."

They said, "Call upon your Lord to show us what is her color." He said, "He says, 'It is a yellow cow, bright in color - pleasing to the observers.' "
