Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Tamuddanna" (تَمُدَّنَّ): Do not stretch or extend — meaning, do not fixate your gaze or longingly look.
  • "Azwājan" (أَزْوَاجًا): Categories, kinds, or groups — here referring to various types of disbelievers.
  • "Zahrat al-ḥayāh al-dunyā" (زَهْرَةَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا): The bloom and splendor of worldly life — its fleeting beauty and temporary allure.
  • "Li-naftinahum" (لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ): So that We may test and try them — meaning, as a trial and a test of their response to blessings.
  • "Rizqu Rabbika" (رِزْقُ رَبِّكَ): The provision from your Lord — referring to the reward and sustenance that Allah has prepared for His righteous servants, both in this life and the Hereafter.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most High, addresses His beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — and through him, every believer — with a profound piece of guidance that protects the heart from envy and discontent. He commands: Do not stretch your eyes toward what We have given to various groups of the disbelievers and the affluent among them. Do not look at their wealth, their palaces, their luxurious garments, or their worldly pleasures with longing or admiration. For all of that is merely the "bloom of worldly life" — like a beautiful flower that blooms for a short while, then withers and fades away. It is a temporary decoration, not a lasting treasure.

Allah explains that He has granted them these enjoyments not as a sign of His love or favor, but as a test — a trial to see how they will use them, and a means by which they may be distracted from the truth and ultimately held accountable. Their wealth and pleasures are, in reality, a form of divine justice that will be weighed against them.

Then Allah directs the believer's heart to what is truly valuable: "And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring." The reward that Allah has stored for His righteous servants — the gardens of Paradise, the eternal bliss, the pleasure of Allah Himself — is far superior to all the glittering treasures of this world. It is better in quality, for it is pure and untainted by any harm, and it is more enduring, for it never ends, never diminishes, and never fades. While worldly pleasures are fleeting and perishable, the reward of Allah is everlasting and ever-renewing.

A Call to the Believer:

Dear believer, this verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder to purify your heart from the disease of envy and the distraction of comparison. When you see others blessed with wealth, status, or beauty, remember that these are but temporary ornaments in a world that will inevitably come to an end. Do not let your eyes wander toward what Allah has given others, for He has already chosen the best for you. Your share — whether it be contentment, faith, or the promise of Paradise — is infinitely greater than anything this world can offer.

Let this verse fill your heart with gratitude and tranquility. Know that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, gives worldly wealth to both the righteous and the wicked, but He reserves His true provision — the provision of faith, peace, and eternal reward — exclusively for His beloved servants. So raise your gaze from the fleeting and fix it upon the everlasting. Seek the provision of your Lord through obedience, patience, and gratitude, and you will find that what He has prepared for you is far better than anything your eyes have ever seen or your heart has ever desired. Indeed, the best is yet to come — and it never ends.

📜 Verse 129-133 — Taha

And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, punishment would have been an obligation [due immediately], and [if not for] a specified term [decreed].
So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.
And they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them evidence of what was in the former scriptures?
