Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- بِسِحْرٍ مِّثْلِهِ — with magic like yours (similar in power and effect).
- مَوْعِدًا — an appointed time and place for the contest.
- لَّا نُخْلِفُهُ — we will not break or fail to honor it.
- مَكَانًا سُوًى — a level, neutral place, equally accessible to both parties.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) presented the clear miracle of his staff turning into a serpent before Pharaoh and his court, the arrogant magicians and Pharaoh responded not with faith, but with defiance. They said: "We will surely bring you magic like it" — meaning, we have magicians who can produce something just as powerful and deceptive. Then they proposed a public challenge: "So set an appointment between us and you, which neither we nor you will fail to keep, in a level place."
This was a bold and calculated move. They wanted a fixed time and a neutral, open location — a place equally distant from both sides — so that no one could claim an unfair advantage. The phrase "a level place" (makānan suwan) indicates a middle ground, visible to all, where the truth could be witnessed by the masses. They were so confident in their sorcery that they demanded a public showdown, unaware that the power of Allah transcends all human trickery.
This verse teaches us several profound lessons:
- The arrogance of falsehood: Pharaoh and his magicians were certain of their victory, but certainty in falsehood is always a prelude to humiliation. When a person relies on their own skill, wealth, or status against the truth of Allah, they are destined to fail.
- The courage of truth: Musa (peace be upon him) did not hesitate or fear the challenge. He accepted it because he knew that Allah is the ultimate protector of His messengers. This is a reminder for every believer: when you stand for truth, Allah will never abandon you, no matter how powerful the opposition appears.
- The importance of fair play: Even in a confrontation with the enemies of truth, the believers are taught to be fair and just. The demand for a neutral, level place shows that Islam values justice and transparency in all matters — even in disputes with opponents.
- Trust in Allah's promise: The magicians later realized the truth when they saw Musa's staff swallow their illusions, and they fell prostrate in faith. This shows that no matter how strong falsehood seems, the light of truth will always prevail.
Dear reader, reflect on this scene: the greatest magicians of the era gathered with all their tools and tricks, yet within moments, their illusions vanished like mist in the sun. This is the reality of every power that opposes Allah — it is fragile, temporary, and doomed to collapse. So place your trust in Allah, stand firm upon His path, and never fear the armies of falsehood, for victory belongs to the truthful.
