Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- "Li-yaqḍū tafathahum" – "Then let them complete their rites" or "let them end their state of ihram." The word *tafath* refers to the remaining rituals and the physical state of being unkempt (removing dirt, trimming nails, shaving hair) that accompanies the state of consecration (ihram).
- "Nudhūrahum" – "Their vows" or "their pledges." This refers to the obligations a pilgrim may have vowed upon themselves, such as additional acts of worship, sacrifices (hady), or completing a specific pilgrimage.
- "Al-Bayt al-ʿAtīq" – "The Ancient House" – a title for the Kaaba, meaning the "liberated" or "freed" house, as Allah has protected it from the domination of tyrants throughout history, and it is the first house established for the worship of Allah alone.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the pilgrim has completed the major rites of Hajj — standing at Arafat, spending the night at Muzdalifah, and stoning the Jamarat — Allah commands the completion of the remaining steps to fully exit the state of ihram and perfect the pilgrimage.
First, "let them complete their tafath" — meaning they should remove the physical remnants of ihram: shaving or trimming their hair, clipping their nails, and cleansing themselves of accumulated dirt and sweat. This symbolizes the transition from a state of sacred consecration back to normal life, while carrying the spiritual purity of the pilgrimage.
Second, "let them fulfill their vows" — pilgrims are instructed to honor any pledges they made during Hajj, whether it be a voluntary sacrifice, an additional prayer, or any act of goodness they committed themselves to. This teaches the believer the importance of keeping one's word and fulfilling promises made to Allah, for a believer is true to their covenant.
Third, "let them perform tawaf around the Ancient House" — this is the Tawaf al-Ifadah (the obligatory circumambulation of the Kaaba), which is a pillar of Hajj. They circle the Kaaba seven times, the very house that Allah has freed from the domination of tyrants and made the spiritual center of the earth. It is called "al-ʿAtīq" because it is ancient — the first house built for the worship of Allah — and because Allah has protected it from every oppressor who sought to destroy or control it.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse beautifully captures the essence of Hajj — a journey of body and soul. It reminds us that true worship is not merely ritual, but a transformation that begins with physical purification, continues with honoring our commitments, and culminates in drawing near to the House of Allah. The Kaaba stands as a symbol of unity, freedom, and devotion — a beacon that has called humanity to monotheism since the time of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). When you stand before it, remember that you are part of a timeless legacy of believers who have submitted to Allah alone. Let this inspire you to purify your heart as you purified your body, to fulfill your promises to Allah as you fulfill your promises to people, and to make your life a continuous tawaf — circling around the remembrance of your Lord, never leaving His presence. This is the beauty of Islam: every act of worship is a lesson in sincerity, discipline, and love for the Creator. May Allah accept the Hajj of all pilgrims and bring them back purified, like the day they were born.
