Meanings of Key Words:
- Ḥurumāt Allah (حُرُمَاتِ اللَّهِ): The sacred things and rites ordained by Allah that must be honored and not violated.
- Rijs (الرِّجْسَ): Filth, impurity, or abomination.
- Awthān (الْأَوْثَانِ): Idols or statues worshipped besides Allah.
- Qawl al-Zūr (قَوْلَ الزُّورِ): False speech, lies, and bearing false witness.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues to guide the pilgrims after completing the rites of Hajj. The phrase "That [is the command]" refers to what was previously mentioned—fulfilling vows, completing the rituals, and circumambulating the Sacred House. Allah then declares that whoever honors and magnifies the sacred things of Allah—by performing the rites sincerely, avoiding what is prohibited during the state of iḥrām, and respecting the sanctity of the sacred months, places, and rituals—then this reverence is better for him with his Lord. It brings immense reward in this life and the Hereafter, elevating the believer’s rank and purifying his soul.
Allah then clarifies that He has made lawful for you the consumption of cattle—camels, cows, and sheep—except what is recited to you in the Qur’an as forbidden, such as carrion, blood, and swine flesh, as detailed in Sūrat al-Mā’idah. This abrogates the false practices of the pre-Islamic Arabs who unlawfully prohibited certain types of cattle like the ḥāmī, baḥīrah, and waṣīlah. Thus, the religion of Islam brings ease and removes the burdens of ignorance.
Finally, Allah commands: "So avoid the abomination of idols, and avoid false speech." This is a call to purify one’s belief and actions. Avoiding idols means shunning all forms of polytheism and superstition, while avoiding false speech means refraining from lying, slander, and especially fabricating lies against Allah by inventing religious rulings or attributing false things to Him. Truthfulness is the foundation of faith, and falsehood corrupts both the individual and society.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse beautifully combines the outer purification of the body through the rites of Hajj with the inner purification of the soul through sincerity and truthfulness. Islam is not merely a set of rituals; it is a complete way of life that elevates the human being to the highest moral standards. When you honor Allah’s commands, you honor yourself, for your Lord is the Most Generous, and He multiplies the reward of every good deed beyond measure. Moreover, the command to avoid idols and false speech is timeless—it calls us to worship Allah alone with pure hearts and to speak the truth in all circumstances, for truthfulness is the path to Paradise. Let this verse inspire you to live a life of reverence, honesty, and devotion, knowing that Allah sees all and rewards abundantly.
