Key Words and Phrases:

  • Al-Fulk (الفلك): The ship or ark.
  • Bi-A'yunina (بأعيننا): Under Our sight and protection, meaning with Allah's care and guardianship.
  • Wa Wahyina (ووحينا): And by Our revelation/command, meaning Allah taught him how to build it.
  • Fara at-Tannoor (فار التنور): The oven (the place where bread is baked) gushed forth with water, a sign of the coming flood.
  • Fasluk (فاسلك): Embark or take into the ship.
  • Zawjayn ithnayni (زوجين اثنين): Pairs, male and female of each species.
  • Sabaqa 'alayhi al-qawl (سبق عليه القول): Those against whom the word of punishment was already decreed.
  • Mughraqoon (مغرقون): Those who will surely be drowned.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound verse, Allah narrates how He responded to His Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) after his long and patient call to his people. Allah revealed to him: "Construct the ark under Our watchful eyes and by Our revelation." This means that Allah was guiding him step by step, protecting him, and teaching him the precise way to build a vessel that would carry the believers and the pairs of animals through the coming trial. It was not a mere human project; it was a divine mission executed with heavenly care.

Then comes the crucial sign: "When Our command comes and the oven gushes forth with water" — this was the signal that the punishment was about to begin. The earth itself would burst with water, and the sky would pour down in torrents. At that moment, Nuh was instructed to take into the ark a pair (male and female) of every kind of living creature to preserve their species, and to embark with his family — except those against whom the decree of destruction had already been passed, such as his own wife and one of his sons who had rejected faith.

Finally, Allah forbade Nuh from interceding on behalf of the wrongdoers: "Do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are to be drowned." This is a powerful reminder that divine justice is absolute. When a people persist in oppression and disbelief after receiving clear warnings, their fate is sealed, and no plea can overturn the decree of the All-Wise.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries timeless lessons for every believer. First, it teaches us that when we obey Allah's commands, even in the most difficult circumstances, He provides us with His protection, guidance, and success. Nuh was building a massive ship far from the sea, mocked by his people, yet he trusted Allah completely. Second, it reminds us of the importance of being with the believers and distancing ourselves from the company of wrongdoers, even if they are close relatives. Faith comes before blood ties. Third, it shows us that Allah's mercy is vast, but His justice is equally certain. The door of repentance is open until the final moment, but once the decree is issued, no intercession avails.

Let this verse inspire you to build your own "ark" of faith, good deeds, and righteous company. Just as Nuh was saved through his obedience, you too can be saved from the floods of trials in this life and the Hereafter by holding firmly to Allah's rope and following His guidance. And never despair of Allah's help — for He is always with those who believe and act righteously.
