Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rabbi (My Lord): The call of a servant to his Creator, acknowledging His absolute sovereignty and power.
- Unṣurnī (Help me / Grant me victory): A plea for divine support and vindication against the oppressors.
- Bimā Kadhdhabūn (Because they denied me): The reason for the plea — their persistent and obstinate rejection of the prophetic message.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Prophet Nūḥ (Noah, peace be upon him) had spent centuries calling his people to the worship of Allah alone, enduring their mockery, insults, and rejection with patience and wisdom, he reached a point of complete despair regarding their faith. They had not only refused to believe but had escalated their hostility, challenging him to bring the punishment he had warned them about.
At this critical moment, Nūḥ turned to his Lord with a heartfelt supplication: "My Lord, help me!" He did not ask for personal revenge or worldly gain — rather, he sought divine justice and vindication of the truth. His request was "because they have denied me" — meaning, their persistent rejection of the message he delivered on Allah's behalf had reached such a degree that there was no longer any hope for their guidance. The punishment he prayed for was not born of anger or ego, but of the certainty that these people had sealed their own fate by rejecting the clear signs of Allah.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: when a believer has exhausted every means of sincere guidance and advice, and the opposition remains stubborn in falsehood, it is then that one turns to Allah in complete reliance, leaving the final judgment to the All-Wise. Nūḥ's prayer was answered, and the flood came as a mercy for the believers and a decisive end for the deniers.
A Call to Reflection:
This moment in the life of Nūḥ (peace be upon him) reminds us of the power of sincere supplication. When you find yourself facing opposition for the sake of truth — whether in calling others to Islam, defending justice, or standing firm against wrongdoing — know that your ultimate refuge is Allah. He hears every plea and responds in the way that is best. Let this verse strengthen your trust in Allah's justice and your patience in the face of hardship. For indeed, the help of Allah is near for those who call upon Him with certainty.
