Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Mala' (الملأ): The chiefs, nobles, and influential leaders of a community.
- Atrafnahum (أترفناهم): We granted them luxury, comfort, and abundant worldly blessings, which led to their arrogance and heedlessness.
- Biliqa' al-Akhirah (بلقاء الآخرة): The meeting with the Hereafter — i.e., the resurrection, reckoning, and recompense.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse unveils the arrogant response of the privileged elite among Prophet Nuh's (Noah) people — those who had rejected faith, denied the Day of Judgment, and been intoxicated by the lavish comforts We had bestowed upon them in this worldly life. Blinded by their wealth and status, they addressed their followers with disdainful words about the Prophet sent to them: "This man is nothing but a human being like yourselves. He eats from the same food you eat and drinks from the same drink you drink."
Their argument was built on a flawed premise — that a messenger of God could not be an ordinary human who shares the basic needs and experiences of life. They failed to recognize that throughout history, Allah has always sent messengers from among their own people, speaking their language and living among them, precisely so that the message would be accessible, relatable, and actionable. The fact that a prophet eats and drinks like others is not a weakness; it is a sign of Allah's wisdom and mercy, making the divine guidance attainable for all.
These leaders, however, were not merely expressing doubt — they were actively campaigning against the truth. Their wealth had corrupted their hearts, making them believe that material privilege was a sign of superiority and that someone of humble means could not possibly carry a divine message. They used the prophet's humanity as a weapon of mockery, hoping to turn the common people away from him.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How often do we, too, judge the value of a message by the worldly status of its carrier? How often do we dismiss sincere advice because the advisor does not match our social standing? This verse teaches us a profound lesson: truth is not measured by the wealth, title, or appearance of the one who speaks it. The prophets of Allah — the best of creation — lived simple lives, ate simple food, and wore simple clothes, yet they carried the most precious treasure: the word of Allah.
Dear reader, do not let the glitter of this world blind you to the light of truth. Look at the message itself — its logic, its beauty, its harmony with human nature — and not at the vessel that delivers it. The Quran repeatedly reminds us that the most honored in the sight of Allah are the most righteous, not the richest or most powerful. When you encounter the call to Islam, respond with an open heart and a sound mind, and you will find in it the peace and success that no amount of worldly luxury can provide.
