Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Rasoolan minhum" — a Messenger from among themselves, meaning one of their own people, familiar to them in language and lineage.
- "Ma lakum min ilahin ghayruh" — you have no deity worthy of worship other than Him.
- "Afala tattaqoon" — will you not then fear Allah and guard yourselves against His punishment by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions?
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah tells us about His mercy and justice: He never leaves a people without guidance. He sent to them a Messenger from their very own midst — in this case, Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) — so that they could easily understand him, trust him, and have no excuse to reject his call. The message was clear and simple: worship Allah alone, for there is no true deity besides Him. All other objects of worship — whether idols, stones, or false gods — are mere inventions with no power to benefit or harm.
The Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) did not ask for wealth, status, or reward. He only called them to their own good: to purify their hearts from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and to submit to their Creator, who gave them life, sustenance, and everything they possessed.
Then comes the gentle yet firm reminder: "Afala tattaqoon?" — Will you not fear Allah? This is a call to awaken their consciousness. If they truly reflected on the reality of their existence — how they were created, how the earth was spread beneath them, how rain falls and crops grow — they would naturally feel awe and reverence for their Lord. Fear of Allah is not a burden; it is a shield that protects the soul from ruin and leads to peace in this life and the next.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of us: the core of every prophetic message is Tawheed (the oneness of Allah). No matter the era or the people, the call remains the same — return to your Lord, worship Him alone, and let the fear of His displeasure guide you to righteousness. How beautiful is this religion that places the greatest importance on the purest belief, and how merciful is Allah that He never leaves us without guidance, sending messengers from among us who understand our nature and speak our language.
So, dear reader, let this verse touch your heart. The same Allah who sent Hud to his people has sent the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), to all of humanity with the same call. The door of repentance is open, and the path to Allah is clear. Will you not then fear Allah and respond to His call?
