وَلَئِنْ أَطَعْتُم بَشَرًا مِّثْلَكُمْ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَّخَاسِرُونَ ۝٣٤

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

Basharan mithlakum – a human being like yourselves, with no superiority in lineage, status, or nature.
La-khasirun – utterly lost, ruined, and deprived of all benefit.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The disbelieving leaders of the people of Thamud said to their followers, warning them against the Prophet Salih (peace be upon him): "If you obey a mere human being like yourselves—someone who eats, drinks, walks in the markets, and possesses no extraordinary power or privilege over you—then you will surely be the losers. You would be abandoning your gods and submitting to a man who has no excellence over you, and in doing so, you would gain nothing but humiliation and ruin."

This statement reflects their arrogance and flawed reasoning. They judged the truth of a message by the worldly status of its bearer, rather than by the truth itself. They failed to realize that prophethood is not a matter of worldly rank, but a divine choice—Allah selects from among His servants whom He wills, regardless of their social standing. The prophets were all human beings, precisely so that people could relate to them, learn from them, and follow their example. Their humanity was not a weakness, but a mercy and a proof.

A Call to Reflection:

How often do we reject guidance because of the vessel through which it comes? How often do we measure a message by the messenger's appearance, wealth, or social status, rather than by its content and truth? The Qur'an repeatedly reminds us that the messengers were human beings, and this is a sign of Allah's wisdom—so that no one can say, "We cannot follow an angel." If angels had been sent, people would have had an excuse, but with human messengers, the proof is established and the path is clear.

Do not be like those who said, "Shall we believe in a human being like ourselves?" For indeed, the greatest honor is not in being a ruler or a chief, but in being a servant of Allah upon truth. The true losers are not those who follow a sincere prophet, but those who reject the truth out of pride and arrogance. Follow the truth wherever it leads, even if it comes from a shepherd or an orphan, for guidance is not measured by the status of the one who carries it, but by the light it brings to your heart.

📜 Verse 32-36 — Al-Mu'minun

32فَأَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِّنْهُمْ أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَيْرُهُ ۖ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

And We sent among them a messenger from themselves, [saying], "Worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?"

33وَقَالَ الْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِهِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِلِقَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ وَأَتْرَفْنَاهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا مَا هَٰذَا إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يَأْكُلُ مِمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ مِنْهُ وَيَشْرَبُ مِمَّا تَشْرَبُونَ

And the eminent among his people who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter while We had given them luxury in the worldly life said, "This is not but a man like yourselves. He eats of that from which you eat and drinks of what you drink.

34وَلَئِنْ أَطَعْتُم بَشَرًا مِّثْلَكُمْ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَّخَاسِرُونَ

And if you should obey a man like yourselves, indeed, you would then be losers.

35أَيَعِدُكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ إِذَا مِتُّمْ وَكُنتُمْ تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَنَّكُم مُّخْرَجُونَ

Does he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones that you will be brought forth [once more]?

36۞ هَيْهَاتَ هَيْهَاتَ لِمَا تُوعَدُونَ

How far, how far, is that which you are promised.
