Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Amānāt (أمانات): Everything entrusted to a person for safekeeping — including wealth, property, secrets, honor, and religious duties.
- ʿAhd (عهد): A covenant, promise, or agreement made with Allah or with other people.
- Rāʿūn (راعون): Those who carefully guard, protect, and fulfill what has been entrusted to them, like a shepherd who watches over his flock.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes a defining quality of the true believers — they are people who faithfully safeguard every trust placed upon them and honor every covenant they make. The trusts referred to here are comprehensive: they include the rights of Allah upon His servants, such as performing prayers, paying zakah, and fulfilling religious obligations, as well as the rights of people, such as returning borrowed items, protecting secrets, and not betraying the confidence of others. Likewise, the covenants include promises made to Allah — like vows and pledges of obedience — and agreements made with fellow human beings, whether in business, marriage, or any other social contract. The believers do not take these matters lightly; rather, they are vigilant guardians of them, fulfilling their duties completely and consistently, just as a shepherd tends to his flock with care and diligence.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
How beautiful is this quality that Allah praises in His righteous servants! Imagine a society where everyone fulfills their trusts and honors their promises — where no one cheats, deceives, or betrays. That is the society Islam seeks to build, and it begins with each one of us. When you keep a secret, return what was borrowed, fulfill your work duties sincerely, or keep your word to your family and friends, you are embodying this noble characteristic that Allah loves. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was known as "Al-Amin" (the Trustworthy) even before his prophethood, and this verse invites us to follow in his footsteps. Let us examine ourselves: Are we among those who guard their trusts and covenants? If we strive to be, we are walking the path of the believers described in this glorious chapter of the Qur'an — a path that leads to eternal success and the pleasure of our Lord.
