Word Meanings:

  • ابْتَغَى (Ibtagha): Sought, desired, or pursued.
  • وَرَاءَ ذَٰلِكَ (Wara'a dhalik): Beyond that, other than that, or in addition to that.
  • الْعَادُونَ (Al-'Adun): The transgressors, those who exceed the limits set by Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah, in the preceding verses, described the believers who guard their chastity and restrict their intimate relations to their spouses and what their right hands possess (bondwomen), this verse draws a clear and firm line: "But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors."

This means that anyone who desires or engages in sexual intimacy outside the framework of lawful marriage or with what is rightfully owned, is stepping beyond the boundaries that Allah has set. They are not merely making a mistake; they are deliberately crossing the line from what is lawful (halal) into what is forbidden (haram). By doing so, they expose themselves to Allah's displeasure, His punishment, and the spiritual and social harms that follow such violations.

The term "transgressors" (al-'adun) is significant—it describes people who know the limits but choose to overstep them. They are not ignorant; they are defiant. This verse serves as a powerful reminder that Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made lawful for us what is pure and beneficial, and has prohibited what is harmful and corrupting. The boundaries are not restrictions to burden us, but protections to preserve our dignity, our families, and our societies.

A Call to Reflection and Righteousness:

Dear believer, reflect on the beauty of this divine guidance. Allah has not left you confused or without direction. He has clearly defined what is permissible and what is not, out of His love and care for you. When you restrain yourself from what He has forbidden, you are not losing anything—rather, you are safeguarding your honor, your peace of heart, and your standing with your Lord. The fleeting pleasure of sin is nothing compared to the lasting tranquility of a life lived within Allah's boundaries. So hold fast to the halal, be content with what Allah has granted you, and know that every act of obedience brings you closer to His pleasure and His eternal reward. Indeed, the one who guards his chastity in this world will be among those who are honored in the Hereafter, shaded by Allah's mercy and granted the purest of companions in Paradise.
