Word Meanings:

  • Ya'izukum (يَعِظُكُمُ): He admonishes you, advises you, and warns you.
  • An ta'oodoo (أَن تَعُودُوا): That you return to or repeat.
  • Li-mithlihi (لِمِثْلِهِ): To something like it — i.e., an act similar to this slanderous accusation.
  • Abadan (أَبَدًا): Ever, at any time, for all time.
  • In kuntum mu'mineen (إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ): If you are (truly) believers.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah — the Most High — turns to the believers with a profound and heartfelt admonition, addressing them directly after the incident of the slander (al-ifk) against the honor of the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). He says: "Allah admonishes you" — meaning He instructs, warns, and lovingly forbids you — "that you ever return to the like of this" — that is, that you ever again engage in spreading such false accusations, gossip, or slander against innocent people, whether in word or in heart. The prohibition is absolute and timeless: "ever" — for the rest of your lives, in every moment and circumstance. This is not merely a suggestion or a piece of advice to be taken lightly; it is a divine command wrapped in paternal tenderness, as the word "ya'izukum" carries the sense of a caring admonition that seeks to protect the believer from harm.

Then Allah conditions this command on faith itself: "if you are believers." This is a powerful and moving connection — it tells us that true faith (iman) is inherently incompatible with slandering the innocent or spreading falsehood about others. A heart that genuinely believes in Allah, His Messenger, and the Day of Judgment cannot simultaneously engage in destroying a person's honor with lies. Faith acts as a shield; it restrains the tongue, purifies the intention, and fills the heart with awe of Allah. So the verse gently but firmly reminds us: if you claim to believe, then let your belief manifest in your conduct — and part of that conduct is guarding your tongue from ever returning to such a grave sin.

This admonition is a mercy from Allah. He does not merely punish or rebuke; He teaches, guides, and opens the door for repentance and self-correction. The believer who hears this verse should feel both a sense of awe at Allah's authority and a deep sense of love for a Lord who cares so intimately about the purity of His servants' hearts and the safety of their communities. It is a call to rise above petty gossip, to protect the honor of others as we would protect our own, and to remember that every word we utter is recorded and will be accounted for.

Da'wah Reflection:

Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your soul. How often do we fall into the trap of speaking about others without certainty, repeating rumors, or amplifying accusations without proof? Allah, in His infinite mercy, has drawn a clear line for us: never return to such behavior — ever. This is not a restriction that diminishes our freedom; rather, it is a protection that elevates our character and brings tranquility to our hearts and societies. When you refrain from slander, you are not just avoiding a sin — you are building a fortress of trust around yourself and your community. And know that the One who admonishes you is the Most Loving, the Most Wise. He wants for you nothing but goodness, in this life and the next. So hold fast to this guidance, and let your faith be the guardian of your tongue. Indeed, the believer who controls their speech is among the most beloved to Allah and the most honored among people.

📜 Verse 15-19 — An-Nur

When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allah, tremendous.
And why, when you heard it, did you not say, "It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, [O Allah]; this is a great slander"?
Allah warns you against returning to the likes of this [conduct], ever, if you should be believers.
And Allah makes clear to you the verses, and Allah is Knowing and Wise.
Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know.
