Key Words and Meanings:

  • Lawlā (وَلَوْلَا): "Why did you not..." — a gentle reproach, meaning "If only you had..." or "Why did you not..."
  • Ifk (إِفْك): The slanderous lie and false accusation — referring to the incident of the slander against 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
  • Subḥānaka (سُبْحَانَكَ): "Glory be to You (O Allah)" — here it expresses astonishment and declaring Allah's absolute perfection and transcendence above any such evil being attributed to His Messenger's household.
  • Buhtān (بُهْتَان): A monstrous lie that astonishes and confounds everyone who hears it — a false accusation so grave it leaves the listener stunned.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, the Most Merciful, addresses the believers who had heard the slanderous lie spread about the Mother of the Believers, 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and instead of shutting it down immediately, some of them entertained it or passed it along. The verse gently but firmly corrects them: "Why, when you heard this lie, did you not immediately say: 'It is not for us to speak of this — Glory be to You, O Allah! This is a monstrous slander!'"

The meaning is profound: the moment the words of accusation reached your ears, the very first reaction of a believing heart should have been to reject it outright. Not just to doubt it, but to declare it impossible — that the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), a woman of pure and noble character, could ever be involved in such a thing. The believer's tongue should have moved instinctively to defend the honor of the Prophet's household and to exalt Allah above allowing such evil to touch the family of His beloved Messenger.

The phrase "Subḥānaka" here is a declaration of Allah's transcendence — that He is far above permitting such filth to be associated with the purest of His creation. It also expresses utter astonishment: "How could anyone even imagine such a thing?!"

And then the verse concludes with the decisive statement: "This is a monstrous slander." Not merely a mistake, not a minor error — but a great, overwhelming falsehood that staggers the mind and weighs heavily in sin.

A Call to the Believers:

O beloved reader, this verse is a timeless lesson for every Muslim until the Day of Judgment. It teaches us the etiquettes of guarding our tongues and our ears. When you hear something harmful about a fellow believer — especially about those who are known for their righteousness and virtue — your first response must not be curiosity, gossip, or even silent listening. Your first response must be rejection, defense, and turning to Allah in astonishment at how such falsehood could even be uttered.

Imagine the reward of being among those who, when they hear evil speech, say: "This is not for us to speak of — Glory be to You, O Allah!" Such a person protects their own heart from the poison of suspicion, protects the honor of their brother or sister, and earns the love of Allah who defends His servants.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever defends the honor of his brother in his absence, Allah will protect his face from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection." (Tirmidhi)

So let this beautiful verse be a shield for your tongue and a light for your heart. Whenever you hear a rumor, a slander, or an accusation against a believer, let your immediate words be: "Subḥānaka, this is a monstrous slander!" — and walk away from it, for Allah loves those who are pure in speech and pure in heart.

And know that the one who guards their tongue in this world will be among those who are given the highest ranks in Paradise, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." (Bukhari and Muslim)

May Allah make us among those who defend honor, guard their tongues, and exalt His name in every situation.

📜 Verse 14-18 — An-Nur

And if it had not been for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, you would have been touched for that [lie] in which you were involved by a great punishment
When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allah, tremendous.
And why, when you heard it, did you not say, "It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, [O Allah]; this is a great slander"?
Allah warns you against returning to the likes of this [conduct], ever, if you should be believers.
And Allah makes clear to you the verses, and Allah is Knowing and Wise.
