Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tashī'a (تَشِيعَ): To spread, circulate, or become widespread among people.
  • Al-Fāḥishah (الْفَاحِشَةُ): A grave sin or immoral act; specifically here, it refers to accusing chaste believers of adultery or fornication (qadhf), and any lewd or slanderous speech.
  • Alīm (أَلِيم): Painful, severe, or agonizing.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most High, declares with absolute certainty that those who love to see immorality and indecency spread among the believers—whether by spreading false accusations of adultery, circulating slander, or delighting in the disgrace of righteous people—will face a painful punishment both in this world and in the Hereafter.

In this worldly life, their punishment includes the prescribed legal penalty (ḥadd) for false accusation, which is eighty lashes, along with the rejection of their testimony forever, as well as the social disgrace and divine trials that befall them. In the Hereafter, unless they sincerely repent, they will suffer the torment of the Fire.

Allah then reminds us: "And Allah knows, while you do not know." This is a profound statement—Allah alone knows the hidden realities, the true innocence of those who were wrongfully accused, the evil intentions of those who spread the lies, and the ultimate consequences of all affairs. Human beings, with their limited knowledge and flawed judgment, cannot perceive what Allah knows perfectly.

This verse was revealed in the context of the slander against Mother ʿĀ'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), when hypocrites and gossipers spread vicious lies about her chastity. Allah defended her honor and exposed the wickedness of those who delighted in her disgrace.

A Call to Reflection and Righteousness:

Dear Muslim, this verse carries a timeless and powerful lesson for every believer. It warns us against a disease that destroys societies and tears apart the bonds of brotherhood: the love of spreading evil about others. In our age of social media and instant communication, how easy it is to share a rumor, forward a message, or laugh at someone's downfall! Yet Allah tells us that those who *love* such spread—not merely those who initiate it, but even those who enjoy its circulation—are threatened with a painful punishment.

Islam teaches us to protect the honor of our fellow believers as we protect our own. The Prophet ﷺ said: *"Whoever conceals (the faults of) a Muslim, Allah will conceal his faults in this world and the Hereafter"* (Muslim). Imagine the reward for guarding a person's reputation, and imagine the consequence for those who delight in destroying it!

Moreover, this verse instills in us a profound trust in Allah's knowledge and wisdom. When you are wronged, when lies are spread about you, remember that Allah knows the truth. He knows your innocence, He knows the intentions of your accusers, and He will bring justice in His perfect time. Do not despair, for Allah's knowledge encompasses everything, and His justice is never delayed without wisdom.

Let this verse be a shield for your tongue and your keyboard. Speak only good, defend the honor of your brothers and sisters, and flee from every word that could harm a believer's dignity. For the love of spreading evil is a trait of the hypocrites, while the love of spreading good is the mark of true faith. Choose your path wisely, for Allah sees all and knows all—and He has promised a painful punishment to those who love evil, and a great reward to those who love good for their fellow believers.

📜 Verse 17-21 — An-Nur

Allah warns you against returning to the likes of this [conduct], ever, if you should be believers.
And Allah makes clear to you the verses, and Allah is Knowing and Wise.
Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know.
And if it had not been for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy... and because Allah is Kind and Merciful.
O you who have believed, do not follow the footsteps of Satan. And whoever follows the footsteps of Satan - indeed, he enjoins immorality and wrongdoing. And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, not one of you would have been pure, ever, but Allah purifies whom He wills, and Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
