But the hypocrites say, "We have believed in Allah and in the Messenger, and we obey"; then a party of them turns away after that. And those are not believers.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(Yatawallā): To turn away, withdraw, or reject.
(Farīq): A group or party of people.
  • بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ (bil-Mu'minīn): True believers (those whose faith is genuine and complete).

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse exposes the reality of the hypocrites (munāfiqūn) who, with their tongues, declare: "We believe in Allah and in the Messenger, and we obey." They utter these words outwardly, claiming full submission to Allah's commands and the Prophet's guidance. Yet, when the time comes to act upon this claim—especially when faced with the Prophet's judgment or the call to strive in the way of Allah—a group among them turns away, refusing to comply. Their actions contradict their words, revealing that their faith is merely a verbal assertion, not a conviction rooted in the heart.

The verse decisively strips them of the title of believers: "And those are not [true] believers." This is a profound negation of faith for those who turn away from obedience after claiming it, because true īmān is not a mere statement—it is a reality that manifests in sincere submission to Allah and His Messenger, in both word and deed. The Qur'an here draws a clear line: faith is not what one says, but what one does in obedience and acceptance of divine guidance.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every Muslim: let your faith be a living reality, not a hollow claim. How often do we say "we hear and we obey," yet hesitate when obedience demands sacrifice, effort, or humility? The believer's hallmark is consistency—the tongue affirms, the heart believes, and the limbs act. Let this verse be a mirror for your soul: when you are called to truth, to justice, to patience, or to support the cause of Allah, do you step forward, or do you quietly turn away? The Qur'an teaches us that Allah values the faith that transforms actions, not the words that fade in the wind. Strive to be among those whose faith is proven by their steadfastness, for the most beloved of people to Allah are those whose words and deeds are in perfect harmony. This is the path of the true believers—a path of honor, sincerity, and closeness to the Most Merciful.

📜 Verse 45-49 — An-Nur

Allah has created every [living] creature from water. And of them are those that move on their bellies, and of them are those that walk on two legs, and of them are those that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
We have certainly sent down distinct verses. And Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.
But the hypocrites say, "We have believed in Allah and in the Messenger, and we obey"; then a party of them turns away after that. And those are not believers.
And when they are called to [the words of] Allah and His Messenger to judge between them, at once a party of them turns aside [in refusal].
But if the right is theirs, they come to him in prompt obedience.
