Word Meanings:

- "Mu'ridoon" (مُعْرِضُونَ): Turning away, avoiding, or refusing with aversion.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes a painful reality about the hypocrites of Madinah. When they are invited to submit their disputes to the Book of Allah and to the judgment of His Messenger ﷺ—the ultimate source of truth and justice—a group of them turns away in arrogance and avoidance. They do not refuse because the judgment is unjust; rather, they fear that the truth will be established against them, exposing their falsehood and selfish interests. Their turning away is not a matter of confusion or doubt, but a deliberate act of defiance rooted in hypocrisy. They claim to believe, yet when the divine law is presented to them as the arbiter, their hearts shrink and their feet hesitate, because they know deep down that the truth will not serve their personal whims.
This verse serves as a mirror for every believer: how do we respond when the Quran and the Sunnah are presented as the final authority in our lives? Do we rush to comply, or do we find excuses to delay and evade? The hypocrite's hallmark is selective submission—accepting Islam when it suits them and fleeing from it when it demands sacrifice or correction. The believer, in contrast, says: "We hear and we obey" (Sami'na wa ata'na), for true faith is not a label but a living commitment to Allah's judgment in every matter, big or small.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is not merely a historical report—it is a living lesson for every generation. Allah is telling us that the measure of our faith is not in our words but in our willingness to submit to His law, even when it goes against our desires. Imagine the beauty of a life where every dispute, every conflict, and every decision is referred back to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. That is the path of peace, justice, and inner tranquility. Do not be among those who turn away when the truth is presented to them. Instead, be among those who hasten to the divine judgment with an open heart, knowing that Allah's wisdom is far greater than our limited understanding. This is the way to true success in this life and the Hereafter. Let your response to Allah's call be one of eagerness and love, for He only calls you to what is best for you.
