Word Meanings:
- Yadra'u (وَيَدْرَأُ): Means "to repel" or "to avert" — it signifies pushing away or warding off something harmful.
- Al-'Adhab (الْعَذَابَ): Here refers to the prescribed legal punishment (hadd) for adultery, which is stoning to death for a married person.
- Shahadat (شَهَادَاتٍ): Oaths or testimonies sworn by Allah.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse continues the divine legislation regarding the case of a husband who accuses his wife of adultery without producing four witnesses — a situation known as *li'an* (mutual cursing). When a husband makes such an accusation, the wife would ordinarily be subject to the severe punishment for adultery. However, the All-Merciful Legislator, in His infinite justice and wisdom, opens a door of salvation for her.
The verse establishes that this punishment is repelled from the wife if she swears four oaths by Allah, testifying that her husband is indeed among the liars in his accusation against her. This is not merely a verbal denial — it is a solemn, repeated invocation of Allah's name, four times, each oath reinforcing her innocence and her certainty before her Creator.
This divine ruling reflects the profound justice of Islam: it does not allow an accusation alone to destroy a person's life, nor does it leave the door closed for the innocent to prove their truthfulness. The wife is given a dignified, formal mechanism to defend herself before Allah and before the community.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this legislation! It shows that Islam protects the honor and dignity of every individual — man and woman alike. The Almighty does not abandon the innocent, nor does He allow false accusations to stand unchallenged. This verse teaches us that even in the most difficult trials, Allah provides a way out (*makhraj*) for those who turn to Him with sincerity.
Dear reader, reflect on the mercy embedded in this ruling: the wife is not left defenseless; her oath before Allah carries weight and consequence. This is a religion that upholds justice, protects the weak, and places ultimate trust in the One who knows all secrets. When you see such precision and fairness in Islamic law, you realize that it is indeed from the All-Wise, the All-Knowing. Let this draw you closer to the beauty of Islam, a faith that honors human dignity and establishes justice in every affair.
