Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Khalaqa (خَلَقَ): Created, brought into existence from nothing.
- Sittati Ayyam (سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ): Six days — periods of time, not necessarily 24-hour days as we know them, since the sun and moon (which define our days) were not yet created.
- Istawā (اسْتَوَىٰ): Rose above, ascended, and established Himself upon — in a manner that befits His majesty, without any resemblance to creation.
- Al-ʿArsh (الْعَرْشِ): The Throne — the greatest and most magnificent of Allah’s creations, which encompasses the heavens and the earth.
- Ar-Raḥmān (الرَّحْمَٰنُ): The Most Merciful — the One whose mercy encompasses all things.
- Khabīr (خَبِيرًا): One who is fully aware and knowledgeable — the All-Aware, who knows everything in perfect detail.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse calls our hearts and minds to reflect upon the greatness of Allah, the Creator of all that exists. He is the One who created the heavens — with their vastness, stars, and galaxies — and the earth — with its mountains, oceans, and all living beings — and everything that lies between them, from the unseen realms to the visible wonders of His creation. He accomplished this in six periods of time, each perfectly measured by His infinite wisdom and power. There was no fatigue, no need for rest, and no assistant — His command is simply "Be," and it is.
Then, after completing the creation of the heavens and the earth, He ascended and established Himself upon the Throne — an elevation that befits His divine majesty, far beyond any human comprehension or comparison to His creation. We affirm this attribute as it came in the Quran and the authentic Sunnah, without asking "how," without distorting its meaning, and without denying it. This is the path of the righteous predecessors and the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah.
And He is Ar-Raḥmān — the Most Merciful — whose mercy embraces everything in existence. His mercy is not limited to this world alone; it extends to the Hereafter, where He will grant His believing servants the ultimate reward of His pleasure and Paradise.
Then Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — and through him, all of humanity — to ask about Him from the One who truly knows Him. "So ask about Him the All-Aware." This means: ask about Allah, His attributes, His names, and His greatness from the One who is fully knowledgeable — and that is Allah Himself, who has revealed His own description in His Book. No one among creation knows Allah better than His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ, who was taught by Allah through revelation. And the scholars who follow his guidance, along with the angels like Jibrīl (Gabriel) who brought the divine knowledge, are also among those who convey the truth about Allah to mankind.
So when you wish to know your Lord, turn to the Quran and the authentic teachings of His Prophet ﷺ — for there you will find the most accurate and complete knowledge of the Most Merciful, the All-Aware.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and contemplate this magnificent universe around you. The sky above you, the earth beneath your feet, the stars that guide you through the night — all of these are signs pointing to a Creator of infinite power and wisdom. He did not create all of this in vain or without purpose. He created it for you, so that you may reflect, appreciate, and turn to Him in gratitude and worship.
And when you come to know Him through His names and attributes — that He is Ar-Raḥmān, the Most Merciful — your heart will find peace, your worries will find relief, and your life will find true meaning. For the One who created you is the same One who loves you, guides you, and has prepared for you a reward beyond your imagination — if only you would seek Him sincerely.
So ask about your Lord from the One who knows Him best — through His Book, through His Messenger ﷺ, and through the scholars who carry the light of revelation. And let that knowledge transform your heart into a home of faith, hope, and love for the Most Merciful, the All-Aware.
