Word Meanings:

  • الرَّحْمَٰنِ (Ar-Rahman): The Most Merciful—one of Allah’s most beautiful names, emphasizing His all-encompassing mercy. The polytheists of Quraysh were unfamiliar with this name, as it was not used in their idolatrous traditions.
  • نُفُورًا (Nufūran): Aversion, recoiling, or fleeing in rejection—an intense turning away from the truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the disbelievers are told, “Prostrate before Ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful) and worship Him alone,” they respond with arrogant ignorance: “And what is Ar-Rahman?” They claim not to know Him, because their hearts are sealed against the names and attributes of Allah that were not part of their ancestral customs. Then they add mockingly, “Shall we prostrate to whatever you command us?”—as if the Prophet (peace be upon him) were inventing a deity they had never heard of. Their rejection is not based on genuine inquiry, but on stubbornness and pride. Instead of softening their hearts, the call to submit to the Most Merciful only increased their aversion and drove them further away from faith, because they hated the very idea of surrendering to a single God.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse reveals the tragic state of those who let arrogance blind them to the clearest truths. The name “Ar-Rahman” itself is a door to Allah’s mercy—a mercy that encompasses every soul, believer and disbeliever alike. Yet, how strange it is that when they are invited to bow before the One who sustains them, feeds them, and showers them with countless blessings, they turn away in disgust! Dear reader, do not be like those who reject the truth out of pride. The prostration of a believer is not humiliation; it is the highest honor—a moment when the servant draws closest to his Lord. When you hear the call to submit to Ar-Rahman, let your heart respond with love and humility, for His mercy is greater than your sins, and His door is always open to those who seek Him. Embrace the beauty of Islam, and you will find peace that no worldly pleasure can ever match.
