Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Wa-ntaṣarū (and they retaliated/defended themselves): They responded to those who attacked them, specifically by defending the honor of the Prophet ﷺ and Islam through poetry.
  • Ayyu munqalabin yanqalibūn (what a turning place they will turn to): What a terrible destination and end they will face — referring to the punishment of Hellfire.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After Allah, the Most High, described the general state of poets — that they say what they do not do and follow the misguided — He made a clear exception for the believing poets. This exception is a beautiful demonstration of Allah’s justice and mercy: He does not condemn an entire group outright, but rather distinguishes between the righteous and the wicked among them.

The exception applies to those poets who:

  1. Believed in Allah and His Messenger with sincere faith,
  2. Did righteous deeds — acting upon their faith in their words and actions,
  3. Remembered Allah much — their poetry never distracted them from the remembrance of Allah, nor did it occupy their hearts away from Him. Rather, they used their poetic gift to praise Allah, extol His oneness, and spread wisdom and good counsel,
  4. Defended themselves after being wronged — when the disbelieving poets attacked the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims with their satire and mockery, the believing poets responded in kind, defending the honor of Islam and its Messenger. This was not aggression, but a legitimate defense against oppression, as exemplified by companions like Ḥassān ibn Thābit (may Allah be pleased with him), whom the Prophet ﷺ himself encouraged and supported in this noble cause.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the instrument is not what matters — what matters is the intention and the use. Poetry, like any other talent or resource, can be a tool for good or for evil. The same tongue that can spread corruption can also spread truth and defend the faith.

The verse concludes with a powerful warning: "And those who wronged will come to know what a turning place they will turn to." This is a threat directed at the oppressors — those who wronged themselves through disbelief and sin, and wronged others through transgression, false accusations, and mockery of the truth. They will soon discover the reality of their end: a terrible return to a place of punishment and loss.

Dear reader, reflect on this verse and take from it the beautiful balance of Islam: it does not forbid artistic expression, but it purifies it. It does not leave the believer defenseless, but permits righteous defense. And it never lets injustice go unnoticed, for every oppressor will face the consequences of their deeds. Let this inspire you to use whatever talents Allah has given you — whether poetry, writing, speaking, or any other skill — in the service of truth and righteousness, and to trust that Allah’s justice will always prevail.
