Word Meanings:

  • Yaqūlūn (they say): They claim and utter with their tongues.
  • Mā lā yafʿalūn (what they do not do): They speak of deeds, virtues, or praises that they themselves never practice or fulfill.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the description of the poets who follow the path of falsehood and deviation, as mentioned in the preceding verses. Allah (Exalted be祂) clarifies that among the reprehensible traits of these poets is that they utter statements that contradict their actions. They claim to have done things they never did, praise people with exaggerated and fabricated commendations, and criticize others with baseless accusations—all while being far removed from truthfulness and integrity.

They wander aimlessly in every valley of false speech, tearing apart reputations, attacking lineages, and slandering chaste women. Their words are not bound by honesty; rather, they say what they do not practice, and they practice what they do not say. This is a hallmark of hypocrisy and moral corruption, for a true believer’s words are consistent with his deeds, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sign of a hypocrite is that when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is entrusted, he betrays the trust."

A Call to Reflection and Guidance:

Dear reader, this verse teaches us a profound lesson about the value of truthfulness and the harmony between speech and action. Islam elevates the believer to a station where his tongue and his heart are in agreement, and his words are a reflection of his reality. How beautiful it is when a person says what he does and does what he says! This is the character of the prophets and the righteous—those whom Allah loves and honors.

Let this verse inspire you to be among those who are truthful in their words, sincere in their deeds, and distant from exaggeration and false claims. For Allah (Glorified be祂) has praised the believers who say: "Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess in our affairs, and make firm our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people" (3:147), and He has warned against those whose sayings contradict their actions, saying: "O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do? Greatly hateful in the sight of Allah is that you say what you do not do" (61:2-3).

So strive, O servant of Allah, to be a person of integrity—one whose words are a trust, whose promises are kept, and whose actions testify to the truth of his speech. This is the path of honor in this world and the key to success in the Hereafter. May Allah make us among those who listen to the word and follow the best of it—those whom He has guided to the straight path.

📜 Verse 224-227 — Ash-Shu'ara

224وَالشُّعَرَاءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ الْغَاوُونَ
And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them;
225أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهُمْ فِي كُلِّ وَادٍ يَهِيمُونَ
Do you not see that in every valley they roam
226وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ
And that they say what they do not do? -
Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah often and defend [the Muslims] after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.
