Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āyātī: My signs, proofs, and revelations — both the revealed scriptures and the universal signs pointing to Allah's oneness.
- Tuḥīṭū bihā ʿilman: To encompass them with knowledge — i.e., to fully comprehend and verify their truth or falsehood through study and reflection.
- Am mādhā: "Or what..." — a rhetorical question of severe rebuke and exposure.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The scene unfolds on the Day of Judgment, when every nation that rejected the truth is gathered and brought before their Lord. The verse describes their final arrival at the place of reckoning, where Allah — in His perfect justice and majesty — confronts them with a question that cuts to the very core of their guilt.
Allah says: "Did you deny My signs without even encompassing them with knowledge?" This is a devastating indictment. They rejected the truth without ever truly examining it, without studying it, without understanding what they were turning away from. They dismissed the revelations and the signs of creation without giving them a fair hearing or a moment of genuine reflection. Their denial was built on ignorance, arrogance, and blind following of their ancestors — not on any sound intellectual foundation.
Then comes the second part of the rebuke: "Or what was it that you used to do?" This is a rhetorical question meant to expose their emptiness. What exactly were they doing with their lives? What did they produce, what good did they achieve, what truth did they uphold? The question leaves them speechless, for they have no answer, no justification, no defense.
The verse carries a profound lesson for us today: Do not reject the truth before you have truly understood it. Islam invites you to reflect, to ponder, to ask questions, and to seek knowledge. The Qur'an repeatedly calls upon humanity to use their intellect — to look at the heavens and the earth, to consider the creation of themselves, to think deeply about the message of revelation. A person who sincerely seeks the truth with an open heart and an honest mind will find the signs of Allah everywhere, and the beauty of Islam will become undeniable.
Yet, how many people today dismiss Islam without ever reading the Qur'an, without ever studying the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, without ever engaging with its teachings fairly? They echo criticisms they have heard but never verified, and they turn away from a message they have never truly encountered. This verse is a timeless warning: on that Day, no one will be able to say, "I did not know." The signs were clear, the message was delivered, and the intellect was given as a gift to recognize the truth.
Let this be an invitation for every sincere seeker: approach the Qur'an with an open heart, read it with reflection, and you will find in it a light that guides to the straight path — a path of peace, purpose, and eternal success. Do not let the Day arrive when you are asked this very question with no answer to give.
