Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Khaa'ifan" (خَائِفًا): Fearful, in a state of apprehension and dread.
  • "Yataraqqab" (يَتَرَقَّبُ): Watching out, anticipating, looking around anxiously for what might happen next—specifically, expecting to be pursued or caught.
  • "Najjinee" (نَجِّنِي): Save me, rescue me, deliver me.
  • "Al-Qawm al-Dhaalimeen" (الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ): The oppressive, wrongdoing people—here referring to Pharaoh and his court who were tyrants and disbelievers.

Explanation of the Verse:

After the believing man from Pharaoh's family had secretly advised Moses (peace be upon him) to leave the city immediately, Moses complied with that sincere counsel. He departed from the city of Pharaoh in a state of fear, his heart pounding, constantly looking over his shoulder, anticipating that the authorities might catch up with him at any moment and seize him. The news of the Egyptian who had died at Moses' hands had spread, and the ruling establishment was deliberating on how to punish him.

In that critical moment of vulnerability and danger, Moses turned to his Lord with a heartfelt supplication, saying: *"My Lord, save me from the oppressive people"*—meaning, rescue me from Pharaoh and his chiefs, and do not let them reach me with any harm. This was the cry of a prophet who knew that true refuge and protection lie only with Allah. He did not rely on his own strength or strategy alone; he placed his complete trust in his Creator.

This verse captures a profound moment of human weakness turning into spiritual strength. Moses, despite being a mighty prophet of Allah, felt fear as any human would—yet he channeled that fear into a sincere prayer, demonstrating that turning to Allah in times of distress is the greatest source of security. It also shows that even the most beloved of Allah's servants face trials, and their response is to seek His help with humility and trust.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful is this scene! A prophet of Allah, fleeing for his life, does not panic or despair. Instead, he raises his hands to the heavens and calls upon his Lord with a short, powerful prayer. This teaches us that no matter how dire our circumstances may seem, Allah is always near, always listening, and always capable of delivering us from the most impossible situations. The Qur'an presents this to us so that we may learn: when you are afraid, when you are alone, when the world seems to close in on you—remember that the Creator of the heavens and the earth is your protector. Call upon Him sincerely, and He will answer. This is the beauty of Islam: it gives us a direct connection to the Almighty, who never abandons His sincere servants. Let this verse inspire you to turn to Allah in every moment of your life—in ease and in hardship—for He is the Best of protectors and the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

📜 Verse 19-23 — Al-Qasas

And when he wanted to strike the one who was an enemy to both of them, he said, "O Moses, do you intend to kill me as you killed someone yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land and do not want to be of the amenders."
And a man came from the farthest end of the city, running. He said, "O Moses, indeed the eminent ones are conferring over you [intending] to kill you, so leave [the city]; indeed, I am to you of the sincere advisors."
So he left it, fearful and anticipating [apprehension]. He said, "My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people."
And when he directed himself toward Madyan, he said, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the sound way."
And when he came to the well of Madyan, he found there a crowd of people watering [their flocks], and he found aside from them two women driving back [their flocks]. He said, "What is your circumstance?" They said, "We do not water until the shepherds dispatch [their flocks]; and our father is an old man."
