Word Meanings:

(Al-Laghw): Vain, worthless, or obscene speech; talk that carries no benefit and is devoid of truth or wisdom.
(A'radoo): They turned away, ignored, and paid no attention to it.
(Salamun 'Alaykum): A farewell of peace and disengagement, meaning "You are safe from us" — not the greeting of peace between believers, but rather a statement of peaceful separation.
(La Nabtaghi Al-Jahileen): We do not seek the company or the ways of the ignorant.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a beautiful portrait of the character of true believers — those who were described in the preceding verses as people of patience, who repel evil with good, and who spend from what Allah has provided them. When these noble souls hear vain, foolish, or abusive speech — such as the insults and mockery that the polytheists directed at the believers among the People of the Book — they do not engage with it. They do not lower themselves to respond in kind, nor do they let such words disturb their hearts or provoke them into sin.

Instead, they turn away with dignity and say: "For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds." This is a profound statement of accountability — every person will reap what they sow. We are not responsible for your actions, and you are not responsible for ours. Each soul stands before its Lord alone.

Then they add: "Peace be upon you." This is not a greeting of affection or approval of what the other party is doing; rather, it is a declaration of safety and disengagement — "You are safe from us; we will not harm you, nor will we repay your ignorance with ignorance." It is a dignified exit from futile arguments, a refusal to be dragged into the mud of petty quarrels.

Finally, they conclude: "We do not seek the ignorant." This means: we do not desire their company, their ways, or their behaviour. We have no interest in engaging with those who persist in foolishness and falsehood, because doing so would only bring harm to our religion, our character, and our peace of mind.

This verse is a golden lesson for every Muslim, especially for those who call others to Allah. It teaches us the art of dignified response: when faced with mockery, insults, or vain talk, the believer's weapon is not retaliation but noble restraint. By turning away gracefully and speaking words of peace, we protect our own souls from sin, preserve our energy for what truly matters, and set an example that may, by Allah's mercy, soften even the hardest of hearts.

Imagine the beauty of this conduct: while others are busy hurling insults, the believer remains serene, focused on their purpose, and unshaken by the noise around them. This is the character that Allah loves — the character that makes Islam attractive to people of sound intellect. Let us strive to embody this noble trait in our daily lives, for truly, the best response to ignorance is not more ignorance, but wisdom, patience, and grace.

📜 Verse 53-57 — Al-Qasas

And when it is recited to them, they say, "We have believed in it; indeed, it is the truth from our Lord. Indeed we were, [even] before it, Muslims [submitting to Allah]."
Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and [because] they avert evil through good, and from what We have provided them they spend.
And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, "For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant."
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
And they say, "If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept from our land." Have we not established for them a safe sanctuary to which are brought the fruits of all things as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.
