Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ummiha (أُمِّهَا): The mother of the towns, meaning the principal city or the capital to which other towns are connected. In this context, it refers to Makkah.
- Yatlu (يَتْلُو): Recites or reads aloud.
- Zalimun (ظَالِمُونَ): Wrongdoers, those who persist in disbelief and transgression against Allah's commands.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Your Lord, O Messenger, never destroys a town or a civilization until He has first sent a Messenger to its mother city — the central and most prominent town — to recite His verses and convey His message. This is the divine pattern of justice: Allah does not punish a people without first establishing clear proof against them through His Messengers. In your case, O Muhammad, that mother city is Makkah, and you are the Messenger sent to its people and to all of humanity.
Moreover, Allah does not destroy any town except when its inhabitants are wrongdoers — those who persist in disbelief, reject the truth after it has been made clear to them, and commit sins against their own souls. Their destruction is not an act of injustice from Allah, but rather a natural consequence of their own oppression and transgression. Allah is far removed from punishing anyone without cause; His mercy and justice demand that He warns before He punishes, and that He only punishes those who deserve it through their own choices.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: Allah's mercy precedes His wrath. He gives people every opportunity to return to Him before His punishment descends. He sends Messengers, reveals Scriptures, and grants respite — all so that humanity may find its way back to the straight path. When punishment does come, it comes only after the most complete form of warning has been delivered, and only upon those who have chosen oppression over justice and disbelief over faith.
Reflect on the beauty of this divine system: your Lord does not act hastily or unjustly. He is patient, merciful, and fair. He sent you, O Muhammad, as a mercy to all worlds, and through you, He established the final proof upon all of humanity. Whoever responds to this call finds salvation, and whoever turns away has only himself to blame. This is the essence of divine justice — a justice that gives every soul its full chance before holding it accountable. Let this inspire you to appreciate the gift of Prophethood and the Qur'an, and to strive in conveying this message with the same mercy and wisdom that Allah Himself has demonstrated throughout history.
