Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Fāḥishah (الفاحشة): The abominable act, referring to a grave sin of immense obscenity and moral depravity.
- Mā Sabaqakum bihā min aḥad (ما سبقكم بها من أحد): No one among all of creation had committed this act before them; they were the first to introduce it.
Tafsir (Explanation):
And remember, O Messenger, when Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) addressed his people, rebuking them with a stern and sorrowful tone: "Indeed, you commit an abominable sin—a deed so vile and repugnant that no one among all the nations of the world before you has ever dared to commit it." This act was the approaching of males with desire instead of females—a perversion that defies the natural disposition (fiṭrah) with which Allah created humanity. It is a transgression that corrupts the individual, destroys the family structure, and spreads chaos in society.
This was not merely a private sin; it was a public practice embraced openly, accompanied by other wicked deeds such as cutting off the roads of travelers and mocking people in their gatherings. The Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) warned them, but their only response was arrogant defiance, challenging him to bring the punishment of Allah if he was truthful.
In this verse lies a profound lesson for all of humanity: the sanctity of the natural order established by Allah, the importance of chastity, and the severe consequences of normalizing what is forbidden. It also teaches us that no society can thrive when its members collectively engage in sins that were previously unknown to the world.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse serves as a timeless reminder of the mercy of Allah in sending prophets to guide humanity away from destruction. It calls us to reflect on the beauty of Islam, which protects the dignity of the individual, the honor of the family, and the purity of society. The story of Lot (peace be upon him) is not just a historical account—it is a living message that Allah's laws are designed for our well-being, and that turning away from them leads only to ruin. Let us embrace the guidance of the Qur'an with open hearts, for it is the path to true happiness in this life and the Hereafter. And let us be grateful that we have been blessed with a religion that calls us to purity, mercy, and justice—a religion that elevates us above base desires and connects us to our Creator.
