Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah recounts the message of Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) to his people, who had reached an unprecedented level of moral depravity. Lut addressed them with a tone of severe reproach, saying: "Do you indeed commit such an abominable act that no creation before you has ever committed?" He specified three major crimes they were guilty of:
First, they approached men with lust instead of women — a grave perversion that violates the natural disposition (fitrah) upon which Allah created humanity. Second, they cut off the roads, lying in wait for travelers and assaulting them, making the paths unsafe and terrorizing those who passed by. Third, they committed open indecency in their very gatherings — mocking people, harming passersby with foul words and actions, and exposing themselves shamelessly in public assemblies.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: evil becomes even more heinous when it is committed openly and collectively. When a society normalizes sin and practices it in public without shame, it invites the wrath of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: "All of my ummah will be forgiven except those who commit sins openly" (Sahih al-Bukhari). Islam commands us to enjoin good and forbid evil, and to protect the dignity and honor of every individual.
The response of Lut's people was not repentance or reflection, but arrogance and mockery. They defiantly challenged him: "Bring us the punishment of Allah if you are indeed among the truthful!" They demanded the very calamity they should have feared and fled from. This reflects the hardened hearts of those who have turned away from truth — instead of heeding the warning, they mock the warner.
This is a timeless reminder for us today: when we see evil spreading in society, we must speak against it with wisdom and courage, just as Lut did. And we must never be like those who mock the truth and demand proof of punishment, for the punishment of Allah is real and inevitable. The Qur'an tells us elsewhere: "And those who do wrong will come to know by what overturning they will be overturned" (Ash-Shu'ara 26:227). Let us hasten to repentance before the decree of Allah arrives, for His mercy is vast for those who turn back to Him, but His punishment is severe for those who persist in transgression.
