Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Madayan (Madyan): The people of Madyan, a region in the northwestern Arabian Peninsula, known for their trade caravans and widespread corruption.
- Akhahum (their brother): A brother in lineage, not in religion — Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) was from the same tribe as them, which made his call more intimate and his message more accessible.
- Ta'thaw (do not act wickedly): From *'uthuw*, meaning to exceed all bounds, spread corruption, and persist in wrongdoing.
- Mufsidin (corrupters): Those who actively spread mischief and moral decay on earth.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) tells us that He sent His Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) to the people of Madyan — a people who were his own kin, so that his call would reach them with warmth and trust. Shu'ayb, upon him be peace, stood before them and delivered a message of profound clarity and mercy. He called them to three essential things:
First: To worship Allah alone, with sincere devotion, and to dedicate all acts of worship to Him — for He is the only true God, and none deserves worship besides Him. This is the foundation of all goodness and the key to eternal success.
Second: To hope for the Last Day — meaning, to perform righteous deeds with the expectation of reward in the Hereafter. This hope is not mere wishful thinking; it is a driving force that purifies intentions, elevates actions, and keeps the believer steadfast on the path of truth. When a person truly hopes for the Day of Judgment, they live with purpose, knowing that every good deed is stored with Allah and will never be lost.
Third: To refrain from spreading corruption on earth. Shu'ayb warned them against persisting in sin and transgression, and against making mischief a habit. He urged them to turn back to Allah in repentance and to abandon their corrupt ways — for corruption destroys societies, breeds injustice, and brings about divine punishment.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity: true success lies in sincere worship, hopeful anticipation of the Hereafter, and a life free from corruption. It is a call to build, not to destroy; to reform, not to corrupt; to hope, not to despair.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this message. Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) did not begin by threatening his people with punishment — he began by inviting them to worship, to hope, and to reform. This is the way of the Prophets: gentle invitation, sincere counsel, and a focus on the heart before the actions. Islam calls you to a life of meaning — a life where your worship connects you to your Creator, your hope in the Hereafter gives you strength, and your conduct brings benefit to the world around you. Embrace this call, and you will find peace in this life and success in the next.
