📖 English Meaning
Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allah they disbelieve?
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ḥaraman Āminan: A secure sanctuary — referring to the sacred precinct of Makkah, which Allah has made a place of safety and protection.
  • Yutakhaṭṭafu: To be snatched away, seized, or carried off — indicating chaos, violence, and insecurity.
  • Al-Bāṭil: Falsehood — here referring to idols, false deities, and all forms of disbelief.
  • Niʿmat Allah: The blessing of Allah — here referring to the great favor of security, as well as the ultimate blessing of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Tafsir (Explanation):

Have these people — the disbelievers of Makkah — not opened their eyes to see the extraordinary reality around them? Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, made their city a sacred sanctuary of peace and safety. Within the boundaries of the Ḥaram, bloodshed is forbidden, fear is dispelled, and the people move about their lives with their lives, wealth, and honor protected. Yet all around them, beyond the sacred borders, the world was in turmoil — tribes were being raided, people were being captured, killed, and their possessions plundered. The Arabs outside Makkah lived in constant fear, never knowing when an enemy might strike. But the people of Makkah slept soundly, traveled securely, and conducted their trade in peace — all by the grace of Allah alone.

This was not a coincidence or a human achievement. It was a divine favor, a living sign from the Lord of the worlds. The very survival and security they enjoyed was a testimony to Allah's care for them — a care they did not earn and could not have secured by their own strength.

Yet, despite this overwhelming evidence of Allah's kindness, what was their response? They turned to falsehood — to idols of stone and wood that could neither benefit nor harm them — and placed their trust in these hollow deities. They believed in the worthless and rejected the priceless. They acknowledged the blessings of Allah with their tongues but denied Him with their deeds, refusing to worship Him alone and to follow the truth He sent through His final Messenger.

This is the height of ingratitude — to be drowning in blessings while denying the One who bestowed them. To be safe while others are terrified, and then to thank the very idols that never protected anyone.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound lesson. How often do we enjoy the blessings of security, health, provision, and faith — and yet forget the Giver? The people of Makkah had the greatest blessing of all: the Kaaba, the sacred sanctuary, and the advent of the final Prophet among them. Yet they rejected him and clung to their false gods.

Today, every one of us has been given countless blessings — the blessing of Islam, the blessing of safety, the blessing of family, the blessing of sustenance. But do we truly appreciate them? Do we thank Allah by obeying Him, or do we, like the disbelievers of old, turn to the falsehoods of this world and neglect the worship of our true Lord?

The Qur'an calls us to wake up — to see the signs around us and within us. Every breath we take, every moment of peace we enjoy, every meal we eat — all are from Allah alone. Let us not be among those who believe in the falsehood of this fleeting world and reject the eternal truth of Allah's mercy. Let us be among the grateful, the believers, and the secure — not in the safety of a physical sanctuary, but in the eternal security of faith in Allah and His Messenger.

May Allah make us among those who recognize His blessings and use them to draw closer to Him, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Generous.

📜 Verse 65-69 — Al-'Ankabut

And when they board a ship, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him
So that they will deny what We have granted them, and they will enjoy themselves. But they are going to know.
Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allah they disbelieve?
And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a [sufficient] residence for the disbelievers?
And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.
