Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

So that they may disbelieve/be ungrateful" — here it refers to the ingratitude of rejecting the blessings of Allah after having witnessed His mercy.
In what We have given them" — referring to the blessings of safety, provision, and deliverance from the sea.
And so that they may enjoy" — meaning they continue to take pleasure in the fleeting comforts of this worldly life.
Then they will come to know" — a severe warning of the consequences that await them.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

When the disbelievers board ships and find themselves at the mercy of the raging sea, fearing drowning and facing the reality of their helplessness, they instinctively turn to Allah alone. In that moment of intense distress, they sincerely call upon Him, abandoning all false deities and idols, for they know deep within their hearts that no one else can save them. Their hearts become pure in that moment, and they make sincere promises of gratitude and faith.

But when Allah, in His infinite mercy and kindness, delivers them safely to the shore, and the danger passes, they quickly forget the One who saved them. They revert to their old ways of associating partners with Allah, as if they had never called upon Him in their time of need. This is a profound contradiction in their behavior — they acknowledge Allah's sole power in times of hardship, yet deny Him in times of ease and comfort.

This ingratitude is not merely a lapse of memory; it is a deliberate choice. They use the very blessings Allah has given them — safety, health, wealth, and the enjoyment of life — as a means to continue in their disbelief and rebellion. Their ultimate goal is to enjoy the pleasures of this world without any sense of accountability or gratitude toward their Creator. They think that by ignoring Allah, they can live freely and without restraint.

But Allah, the All-Knowing, warns them clearly: "Then they will come to know." This is a powerful threat and a promise of divine justice. They will soon realize the consequences of their ingratitude — either at the moment of death, when the veil is lifted and the truth becomes undeniable, or on the Day of Judgment, when they will face the painful punishment they have earned. On that Day, all the temporary pleasures they enjoyed will seem worthless, and they will wish they had been grateful and obedient.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. How often do we remember Allah in times of difficulty, and how quickly do we forget Him when ease returns? The true believer is one who remains constant in gratitude and worship — in both hardship and prosperity. Allah does not need our gratitude; rather, it is we who need His blessings and mercy. Let us not be among those who only remember their Lord when they are in trouble, for the One who saved you from the depths of the sea is the same One who provides for you every single day. Turn to Him sincerely, thank Him constantly, and you will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 64-68 — Al-'Ankabut

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.
And when they board a ship, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him
So that they will deny what We have granted them, and they will enjoy themselves. But they are going to know.
Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allah they disbelieve?
And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a [sufficient] residence for the disbelievers?
