📖 English Meaning
If a wound should touch you - there has already touched the [opposing] people a wound similar to it. And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people so that Allah may make evident those who believe and [may] take to Himself from among you martyrs - and Allah does not like the wrongdoers -

Key Words and Phrases:

  • Qarḥ (قَرْحٌ): Wounds, injuries, or affliction—including being killed or harmed in battle.
  • Mas (مَسَّ): To touch or befall; here meaning to afflict or strike.
  • Nudāwiluhā (نُدَاوِلُهَا): We alternate or rotate; meaning We cause days (of victory and defeat) to circulate among people.
  • Shuhadā' (شُهَدَاءَ): Martyrs—those who are honored by being killed in the cause of Allah.
  • Ẓālimīn (الظَّالِمِينَ): The wrongdoers—those who harm themselves by abandoning what Allah has commanded, such as jihad.

Explanation of the Verse:

O believers, if you were struck with wounds, loss, and death at the Battle of Uḥud, and this grieved you deeply, then know that the enemy was struck with a similar affliction at the Battle of Badr. There, the Muslims killed seventy of the disbelievers and captured seventy more. So your pain is not unique—it is a test that both sides taste, and you are not singled out for suffering.

Allah, in His infinite wisdom, alternates the days of triumph and hardship among people. Sometimes victory is for the believers, and sometimes they face trial and setback. This is not random or unjust; rather, it is a divine system with profound purposes. Through these alternating circumstances, Allah makes evident—in a way that is witnessed in action—who is truly sincere in faith and who is merely a hypocrite. The one who stands firm in times of difficulty is distinguished from the one who retreats or abandons the cause.

Furthermore, through these trials, Allah honors some of you with the noble station of martyrdom. He chooses from among His servants those whom He loves to be killed in His path, elevating them to the highest ranks of Paradise. This is not a loss; it is a great honor and a mercy from your Lord.

And Allah does not love the wrongdoers—those who wrong themselves by staying behind from fighting in His cause, or who let fear and attachment to this worldly life overcome their duty to Him. Their abandonment of the battlefield is an injustice against their own souls, and Allah is far removed from any love for such people.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, let this verse fill your heart with patience and hope. The path of faith is not a bed of roses—it is a path of struggle, sacrifice, and sometimes wounds. But every hardship you face is a means of purification, a way to prove your sincerity, and a ladder to raise your rank with your Lord. Do not let a setback make you despair, for the very same days that brought you pain also brought the enemy pain. Victory and defeat are tools in the Hands of Allah, and He uses them to shape you into the strong, patient, and devoted servant He loves.

So stand firm, be steadfast, and never retreat from the cause of truth. If you are tested, know that you are being honored. If you are wounded, know that your reward is with Allah. And if you are called to martyrdom, then rejoice—for you have been chosen for the greatest honor a believer can attain. Do not be among those who wrong themselves by turning away; rather, be among those who race toward the pleasure of Allah, trusting that every moment of sacrifice is an investment in an eternal reward that never fades.

📜 Verse 138-142 — Aal-Imran

This [Qur'an] is a clear statement to [all] the people and a guidance and instruction for those conscious of Allah.
So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.
If a wound should touch you - there has already touched the [opposing] people a wound similar to it. And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people so that Allah may make evident those who believe and [may] take to Himself from among you martyrs - and Allah does not like the wrongdoers -
And that Allah may purify the believers [through trials] and destroy the disbelievers.
Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allah has not yet made evident those of you who fight in His cause and made evident those who are steadfast?
