Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تُطِيعُوا (you obey): Following their commands and heeding their advice.
- يَرُدُّوكُمْ عَلَىٰ أَعْقَابِكُمْ (they will turn you back on your heels): They will cause you to revert to your former state of disbelief, just as one who retreats backward after having advanced forward.
- فَتَنقَلِبُوا خَاسِرِينَ (so you will become losers): You will return from your journey of faith as people who have lost everything—both in this world and the Hereafter.
Explanation of the Verse:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger! If you listen to and obey those who have rejected faith—whether they be from the People of the Book, the hypocrites, or the polytheists—in what they command you or forbid you, they will not rest until they have pulled you away from the path of guidance. They will drag you back to your former state of ignorance and disbelief, undoing all the progress you have made in faith.
This is a grave warning: the one who turns back from faith after having believed has traded certain profit for certain loss. In this world, they lose their honor, their peace, and their connection to their Lord. In the Hereafter, they face the ultimate loss—eternal punishment and separation from Allah's mercy. The verse paints a vivid picture: a believer who follows the disbelievers is like a merchant who had earned great wealth but then throws it all away, returning home empty-handed and ruined.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse is a protective shield for your heart! Allah, in His infinite mercy, is warning you before you fall into the trap. The disbelievers—whatever their motives—will never truly wish for your success. Their advice, no matter how appealing or logical it may seem, is poisoned at its root because it stems from a heart that does not know Allah.
So hold firmly to your faith! Do not let anyone—no matter how influential, wealthy, or persuasive—turn you away from the light of Islam. Your faith is your greatest treasure; guard it with your life. When you are faced with trials, remember that turning to Allah and His Messenger is always the path of victory, while turning to the disbelievers is the path of ruin.
And know that the sweetness of faith, the peace of submission, and the hope of Paradise are far greater than anything the world can offer. Do not trade the eternal for the temporary. Stand firm, and Allah will never abandon you.
