Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) after the delegation of Christians from Najran came to argue about the true nature of Jesus (peace be upon him). They claimed that Jesus was the son of God, while the truth had already been revealed: Jesus was a servant of Allah, His messenger, and His word which He cast into Mary, and a spirit from Him—created by Allah's command, not divine in any way.
When clear knowledge and definitive proofs had already come to the Prophet, and they still persisted in their falsehood and stubbornness, Allah commanded him to challenge them to a decisive act: mutual invocation of curses (mubahalah). This was the ultimate proof—calling upon Allah to send His curse upon the liars among the two parties.
The Prophet was instructed to invite them to bring their sons, their women, and themselves, and then both sides would earnestly supplicate to Allah that His curse and punishment descend upon those who speak falsely regarding Jesus. This was a profound demonstration of certainty in the truth, for the one who is confident in his position does not hesitate to invoke Allah's judgment.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) responded to this divine command by bringing his grandsons Hasan and Husayn as his "sons," his daughter Fatimah as his "women," and himself and Ali as his "selves"—showing the utmost sincerity and closeness to his family in this matter. When the Christians of Najran saw this, they recognized the truth and refrained from the mubahalah, fearing destruction, and instead agreed to pay the jizyah (tribute) in peace.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer: when truth is clear, one must stand firm upon it with confidence, and when faced with obstinate falsehood, the believer relies on Allah's justice and truthfulness. It also highlights the immense honor of the Prophet's family and their central role in Islamic history.
Dear reader, this verse invites you to reflect on the certainty of faith. The Prophet's willingness to invoke Allah's curse upon the liars was not born of arrogance, but of absolute conviction in the oneness of Allah and the truth of His message. It teaches us that when we are certain of the truth, we should not waver or compromise, but stand firm, trusting in Allah's judgment. And it reminds us that Allah always defends His truthful servants and exposes falsehood, for He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. Let this strengthen your heart in your own journey of faith, knowing that the truth of Islam is built upon clear evidence and divine guidance, and that Allah is ever ready to support those who sincerely seek Him.
