Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Luqmān the Wise continues his loving counsel to his son, teaching him a timeless lesson about the reality of accountability before Allah. He says: "O my dear son, if a deed—whether good or evil—were as small as the weight of a single mustard seed, and it were hidden deep inside a solid rock, or buried somewhere in the vast heavens, or concealed within the depths of the earth, Allah would still bring it forth on the Day of Judgment."
This means that no action, no matter how tiny or well-hidden, escapes Allah’s knowledge. The mustard seed is used as an example because it is among the smallest things one can imagine. Even if that tiny deed were placed in the most inaccessible, concealed location—inside a massive rock, or in the farthest corner of the heavens, or in the deepest part of the earth—Allah would still extract it and hold the person accountable for it, rewarding or punishing accordingly.
The verse concludes with two beautiful names of Allah: Al-Laṭīf (the Subtle One), meaning He knows the finest intricacies of all things and His knowledge penetrates through everything, and Al-Khabīr (the All-Aware), meaning He is fully acquainted with the true nature and exact whereabouts of every single thing. Nothing is hidden from Him, and His justice is perfect.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse fills the believer’s heart with both awe and comfort. It instills a sense of profound responsibility—knowing that every small deed is recorded and will be brought forth. At the same time, it brings immense comfort: your good deeds, even the tiniest ones, are never lost. A kind word, a gentle smile, a secret act of charity—Allah sees it all and will reward it generously. And for those who do wrong in secret, thinking no one sees, this verse serves as a gentle but firm reminder that Allah’s knowledge encompasses everything.
So, dear reader, let this verse inspire you to never underestimate the power of small good deeds, and to always be mindful that Allah’s awareness is with you wherever you go. The One who is Subtle and All-Aware is the Most Just, and He will never let a single atom’s weight of good or evil go unnoticed. What a beautiful religion this is—one that gives weight to every sincere action and assures us that justice will prevail, no matter how hidden things may seem!
