Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the beautiful advice of Luqman to his son, but here Allah addresses the believing child directly, teaching him the delicate balance between honoring parents and maintaining pure faith.

Allah says: Even if your parents exert great effort and pressure upon you to make you associate partners with Me — partners about which you have no true knowledge, for there is no proof of their divinity and no reality to their existence — then do not obey them in that. Obedience to parents is a duty, but it has limits: there is no obedience to any created being if it involves disobedience to the Creator. Shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the greatest sin, and no command — even from the most beloved of parents — can justify it.

Yet — and here is the beauty of Islam — this refusal to obey them in sin does not mean cutting ties with them or treating them harshly. Allah immediately commands: "And keep company with them in this world in a good manner." You must still be kind to them, serve them, speak gently to them, and fulfill your duties toward them as much as you can, as long as it does not involve sin. You can disagree with their beliefs, but you cannot abandon your duty of kindness. This is the perfect balance: firmness in faith, gentleness in conduct.

Then Allah directs the believer to the right path: "And follow the way of those who turn back to Me." Follow the path of the Prophets and the righteous — those who have submitted to Allah, repented from sin, and devoted themselves to His worship. This is the safe path, the path of guidance and light.

And the verse concludes with a powerful reminder: "Then to Me is your return, and I will inform you of what you used to do." On the Day of Judgment, all will return to Allah — the parents and the child alike. Allah will judge between them with perfect justice. He knows every deed, every intention, every struggle. The one who remained patient upon faith will be rewarded, and the one who persisted in falsehood will face the consequence.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, see how Islam honors parents! Even when they push you toward shirk — the gravest sin — Allah still commands you to treat them kindly in this world. This is the mercy and wisdom of Islam. It does not ask you to hate your parents or abandon them; it asks you to love them, serve them, and pray for their guidance, while never compromising your own faith.

And to those who may be struggling with non-Muslim parents or family members: know that your patience and kindness are acts of worship. Your good character may be the very means by which Allah opens their hearts to Islam. Never despair of Allah's mercy — He guides whom He wills, and your role is to stay firm, stay kind, and keep supplicating for them.

This verse also teaches us a profound principle: loyalty to Allah comes first, always. No relationship, no matter how sacred, can override the command of Allah. But this loyalty never excuses rudeness or harshness. Be firm in your faith, gentle in your dealings, and hopeful in your return to your Lord.

📜 Verse 13-17 — Luqman

And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice."
And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.
But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
[And Luqman said], "O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.
O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.
