Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Bayna yadayhi" (between his hands): Refers to the previous divine scriptures—the Torah, the Gospel, and the Psalms—that came before the Qur'an.
- "Mawqoofoon" (detained/held): Standing halted before their Lord, prevented from moving, awaiting judgment.
- "Yarji'u ba'duhum ila ba'din al-qawl" (they exchange words among themselves): They turn to one another, disputing and arguing, each blaming the other.
- "Alladheena istud'ifu" (those who were oppressed/weakened): The followers who were considered weak and were led astray by their leaders.
- "Alladheena istakbaru" (those who were arrogant): The leaders, chiefs, and elites who proudly rejected the truth and misled others.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The disbelievers, in their stubbornness and arrogance, declared emphatically: "We will never believe in this Qur'an, nor in the scriptures that came before it." With this single statement, they rejected not only the final revelation but all of Allah's divine books—the Torah, the Gospel, and the Psalms—showing that their denial was not based on investigation or truth, but on pure obstinacy and blind following of their desires.
Then Allah turns our attention to a scene of utter regret and blame-shifting that will unfold on the Day of Judgment. If you could only see, O Messenger, when these wrongdoers are halted before their Lord, detained for reckoning, you would witness something truly terrible. They begin to argue among themselves, each one trying to absolve himself of responsibility. The weak followers—those who were oppressed and misled—turn to their arrogant leaders and say: "Had it not been for you, we would have been believers! You blocked our path, you beautified falsehood for us, and you prevented us from following the truth."
This verse carries a profound lesson for us today: Leadership carries immense responsibility. Those who mislead others will bear the burden of their own sin and the sin of those they led astray. And those who follow blindly, without seeking the truth, will also face the consequences of their choice. The Qur'an repeatedly warns us to think, reflect, and seek guidance—not to surrender our intellects to anyone, no matter how influential they may be.
Yet, in this same verse lies a beautiful mercy: Allah informs us that the followers will acknowledge that had they been guided, they would have believed. This shows that faith is a choice, and every soul is responsible for its own salvation. The door of faith is open to all who sincerely seek it, and no one can truly prevent a sincere heart from finding its Lord.
So let this be a reminder for us all: Do not let arrogance or social pressure keep you from the truth. The Qur'an is a light that illuminates every darkness, and the previous scriptures all pointed to this final guidance. Embrace it with an open heart, and you will find peace in this life and success in the next.
