Surah Saba — Verse 30

Word Meanings:

• Mee‘ād (مِيعَاد): An appointed time or a promised deadline.
• Lā tasta’khirūn (لَا تَسْتَأْخِرُونَ): You cannot delay it or postpone it.
• Lā tastaqdimūn (وَلَا تَسْتَقْدِمُونَ): You cannot bring it forward or hasten it.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Prophet, say to those who mockingly challenge the coming of the punishment and the Day of Judgment: "There is an appointed time for you—a fixed day that is inevitable and certain. That day is the Day of Resurrection. You will not be able to delay it by even a single hour, nor will you be able to bring it forward by a single hour."

This is a stern warning and a decisive reply to those who, in their arrogance and disbelief, used to say: "When will this promise come to pass, if you are truthful?" They thought they could escape or manipulate the timing of Allah’s decree, but the reality is that the matter rests entirely with Allah alone. He has set a precise, unchangeable time for the Hour, and no soul can hasten it or postpone it. When that day arrives, it will seize them suddenly, and no plea, repentance, or excuse will avail them.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every human being: the certainty of the Hereafter is an absolute truth. The wise believer does not waste time in denial or mockery, but rather prepares for that inevitable meeting with his Lord—through sincere faith, righteous deeds, and turning away from sin. The One who has decreed this appointment is the Most Just, the Most Wise, and His promise is true. So take heed before that day comes upon you unawares, for then there will be no second chance, no delay, and no return. Embrace the mercy of your Lord now, while the door of repentance is still open, and let the fear of that certain day be a motivation for goodness and a deterrent from evil. Indeed, the success of the believer lies in remembering that day and living in constant readiness for it.
