Explanation of the Verse:
After mentioning the fate of previous nations and the revelation of the Book to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Allah declares that He has chosen the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him) to inherit the Qur’an — a tremendous honor and distinction. This inheritance is not merely a possession of the text, but a responsibility to believe in it, act upon it, and convey it to humanity.
Allah then divides this chosen Ummah into three categories, showing His mercy and justice:
- The one who wrongs himself (ẓālimun li-nafsihi): This is the Muslim who falls into sins, neglects some obligatory duties, or commits prohibited acts. Yet, despite his shortcomings, he still holds onto faith in the Qur’an and the core of Islam. His wrongdoings harm his own soul, not Allah, and he remains within the fold of the Ummah, subject to Allah’s will — either forgiven through repentance and mercy, or purified through punishment before entering Paradise.
- The moderate one (muqtaṣid): This is the Muslim who fulfills the obligatory acts (farā’id) and avoids the prohibited matters (muḥarramāt). He maintains a balanced path — doing what is required and staying away from what is forbidden — though he may sometimes miss some recommended acts (mustaḥabbāt) or engage in some disliked matters (makrūhāt). He is on the straight path, secure in his obedience, yet not at the highest peak of excellence.
- The one who races ahead in good deeds (sābiqun bil-khayrāt): This is the foremost and most excellent — the one who not only fulfills obligations and avoids prohibitions but also eagerly pursues voluntary acts of worship, charity, and goodness. He does so bi-idhni Allah (by Allah’s permission and grace), acknowledging that all success comes from Allah’s tawfīq (divine facilitation). His life is a constant striving for excellence (iḥsān), seeking the highest ranks of Paradise.
Allah concludes: "That is the great bounty." This refers to the very act of choosing this Ummah, granting them the Qur’an, and opening the doors of Paradise to all three categories — for even the one who wrongs himself is not abandoned, but given the chance for repentance and ultimate salvation. This is indeed the greatest favor, unmatched by any worldly blessing.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, reflect on this immense honor: Allah chose you to be part of this Ummah — the Ummah of the final Prophet (peace be upon him) — and placed the Qur’an in your hands. This is not a random occurrence; it is a divine selection filled with love and purpose. No matter which category you find yourself in today, know that the door of return is always open. If you see yourself as one who wrongs his soul, hasten to repentance — for Allah’s mercy embraces all who turn back to Him. If you are moderate, strive to ascend higher by adding voluntary deeds to your obligatory ones. And if you are among those racing ahead, remain humble and grateful, for your success is solely by Allah’s permission.
The Qur’an is not a burden — it is a light, a guide, and a treasure. Let it transform your heart, purify your actions, and lead you to the eternal bliss of Paradise. This is the great bounty — so seize it with gratitude and determination, and never let this precious inheritance be neglected in your life.
