Surah Yasin — Verse 28

Word Meanings:

• Min jundin min al-samaa’ — a host or army from the heavens, meaning angels sent down for punishment.
• Wa mā kunnā munzilīn — and We were not [in the habit of] sending down [angels for such purposes].

Tafsir (Explanation):

After the believing man was killed by his people, and after they persisted in their rejection of the messengers, Allah did not need to send down a host of angels from the sky to destroy them. Such a display of divine power was unnecessary, for they were far too weak and insignificant before His might. Instead, their punishment came in a far simpler and more decisive manner — a single, overwhelming blast from the sky that seized them all.

This verse also teaches a profound truth: it was not Allah’s established practice to send angels as agents of destruction upon every nation that was doomed. Rather, He would decree their end through various means — sometimes a shout, sometimes a wind, sometimes the earth swallowing them, and sometimes other forms of chastisement. The sending of angels in great numbers was reserved for special occasions, not for the routine destruction of disbelieving peoples.

A Da’wah Reflection:

How easy it is for Allah to bring down the mightiest of tyrants! When a people reject the truth and harm His righteous servants, their end is never far, and no power on earth can shield them. Yet, in His mercy, Allah gives respite — He delays punishment so that sinners may turn back to Him in repentance. This verse should awaken in every heart a sense of awe and humility: if a whole nation could be wiped out by a single blast, how much more should we, as individuals, take heed of our own deeds? Let us not be among those who mock the messengers of truth or harm the believers, for Allah’s justice is swift, and His power knows no bounds. At the same time, let us rejoice in His mercy, for He does not hasten to punish, but waits for us to return to Him with sincere hearts.
