Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sayḥah (صَيْحَةً): A single, powerful blast or shout — here referring to the divine punishment delivered by the angel Jibrīl (Gabriel) upon the people of the town.
- Khāmidūn (خَامِدُونَ): Literally meaning "extinguished" or "dead" — like embers that have lost their fire and turned to cold ash, with no trace of life or movement left.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse describes the sudden and total destruction of a people who rejected the messengers sent to them. After they persisted in disbelief, mocked the truth, and refused to heed the call of their prophets, Allah’s punishment came upon them in the most swift and decisive manner — not through armies, not through prolonged torment, but through a single, overwhelming blast. One cry from the angel of punishment, and in an instant, they were all struck dead. They did not have time to repent, to flee, or to resist. Their lives were snuffed out completely, like a fire that is suddenly doused, leaving behind only cold, lifeless ashes — no sound, no movement, no trace of their former existence.
This scene carries a profound lesson for every generation: the power of Allah is absolute, and His decree cannot be delayed or challenged. When He wills a matter, He merely says "Be," and it is. The people of that town were strong, prosperous, and confident in their numbers, yet none of that availed them against the command of their Lord. Their destruction was not gradual or drawn out — it was instantaneous, leaving no opportunity for escape or regret.
Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. The same Allah who destroyed those people with a single cry is alive today, watching over His creation, and His justice is ever-present. Do not be deceived by the delay of punishment or the apparent success of those who oppose the truth. The Qur’an repeatedly reminds us that the respite given to the wrongdoers is not a sign of Allah’s neglect, but rather a test of patience for the believers and a chance for the wrongdoers to return to Him. Yet, when the appointed time comes, no power on earth can hold back His decree.
This verse also fills the believer’s heart with gratitude and hope. If you have been blessed with faith, thank Allah for guiding you before that final cry reached you. And if you know someone who is still far from the truth, let this be a reminder to invite them with kindness and wisdom, for none of us knows when the door of repentance will close forever. The door is open now — do not wait until it is too late. Turn to your Lord, seek His mercy, and live a life that pleases Him, so that when the hour comes, you may be among those who are raised in peace, not among those who are extinguished in ruin.
