Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- إِلَّا رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا — "Except as a mercy from Us": meaning, their deliverance and survival is not due to their own merit or power, but purely an act of divine grace and compassion from Allah.
- وَمَتَاعًا — "And as enjoyment": temporary provision and benefit, referring to the continued life granted to them.
- إِلَىٰ حِينٍ — "Until a specified time": meaning until their appointed term of death, a fixed and limited period that cannot be exceeded.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse follows the description of how the people of the past were drowned and destroyed when they rejected the truth. Here, Allah clarifies that if He wills to destroy a people, no one can save them, and they will not be rescued — except when Allah Himself chooses to show mercy. The exception is not from the people's side, but from Allah's own grace.
The meaning is: "We do not destroy them except when We will it, and We do not save them from destruction except as an act of mercy from Us." When Allah spares a people, it is purely out of His compassion — He grants them deliverance from calamity and allows them to continue living, enjoying the blessings of this world, until the appointed time of their death arrives. This respite is not random; it carries a profound purpose: to give them the opportunity to reflect, repent, and return to the path of faith before their final hour comes.
The verse gently reminds us that every breath we take is a gift of divine mercy. The very fact that we wake up each morning, that we are not struck by sudden calamity, is not because we deserve it — it is because Allah, in His infinite kindness, is giving us more time. This is a call to seize that opportunity: to look at our lives, correct our course, and turn back to our Creator before the appointed term arrives, for that term is fixed and cannot be delayed or advanced.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and consider: how many times have you been spared from danger, illness, or disaster without even realizing it? Every day you live is a mercy from Allah — an open door of opportunity. He does not need you, but He gives you time because He loves for you to return to Him. Do not let this precious gift slip away. Let this verse awaken your heart: your life today is not a right you earned, but a mercy you received. Use it wisely — in worship, in goodness, and in drawing closer to the One who granted you this very moment. The door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not wait until the "specified time" arrives, for when it does, no plea will be accepted.
