Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- At-taqwa (اتَّقُوا): To be cautious, to guard oneself, to fear the consequences of disobedience, and to protect oneself from what incurs Allah's displeasure.
- Ma bayna aydīkum (مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ): Literally "what is between your hands" — meaning what lies ahead, i.e., the Hereafter and its terrors.
- Ma khalfakum (مَا خَلْفَكُمْ): "What is behind you" — meaning the worldly life that has passed or is passing away, with its fleeting pleasures and trials.
- Laʿallakum turḥamūn (لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ): "So that you may receive mercy" — hoping for Allah's compassion and forgiveness.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah tells us about the state of the disbelievers who turn away from the truth. When they are advised and reminded — "Fear what is before you and what is behind you" — they do not respond; they turn away in heedlessness.
The call directed to them has two dimensions:
First, "what is before you" refers to the Hereafter — the Day of Judgment, the resurrection, the reckoning, the scales, the bridge (Ṣirāṭ), and the ultimate destination of either Paradise or Hellfire. They are told: Be mindful of that awesome Day, prepare for it, and work for it before it arrives, for no one knows when death will overtake them.
Second, "what is behind you" refers to the worldly life — its temptations, its fleeting pleasures, and its punishments. They are warned: Do not be deceived by this world, for it is passing away. Look at the nations before you — how they were destroyed when they transgressed. Learn from their fate and do not be arrogant or neglectful.
The purpose of this admonition is stated clearly: "so that you may receive mercy." The path of mindfulness (taqwa) is the path to Allah's mercy. If they would only listen and respond, they would attain the greatest success — the mercy of Allah in this life and the next, which brings with it guidance, forgiveness, and eternal bliss.
Yet, despite this beautiful call and sincere advice, the verse indicates that they turn away — they do not give it any attention. This is the tragedy of those who are engrossed in their desires and blind to the truth.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
How merciful is this Qur'anic call! It does not threaten for the sake of threatening; it opens the door of hope. The very purpose of fearing Allah is not to live in terror, but to reach His mercy. Allah does not want to destroy His servants; He wants to save them. The call to taqwa is a call to safety, to peace, to a life of purpose and tranquility.
Dear reader, whenever you hear this call — whether from the Qur'an or from a sincere advisor — do not turn away like those described here. Respond with your heart, your tongue, and your actions. Fear the Hereafter so that you may be saved from its terrors. Do not be deceived by this world, for it is a bridge to the eternal abode. And always keep hope in Allah's mercy alive in your heart, for His mercy encompasses all things. The door of repentance is open, and the call is still being made. Will you be among those who answer?
