Word Meanings:

  • وَتَرَكْنَا: And We left/established for him.
  • عَلَيْهِ: Upon him (i.e., for his sake or as his legacy).
  • فِي الْآخِرِينَ: Among the later generations (those who came after him).

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is part of the narrative of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him), where Allah mentions the great honor He bestowed upon His beloved prophet. After mentioning how Ibrahim was saved from the fire, given victory over his enemies, and blessed with righteous offspring, Allah now adds another immense blessing: "And We left for him [a good reputation] among the later generations."

This means that Allah preserved for Ibrahim a beautiful and lasting remembrance among all nations that came after him. His name is mentioned with praise, love, and reverence by followers of all divine religions—Jews, Christians, and Muslims—and indeed, by all who know his story. He is remembered as a model of faith, patience, and unwavering devotion to the One True God. This is not merely a historical mention, but a living legacy of honor that continues to grow until the Day of Judgment.

The verse highlights that Allah, in His infinite mercy, not only blessed Ibrahim in his lifetime but also granted him an eternal legacy of goodness. His name is invoked in the daily prayers of Muslims (in the Tashahhud), and he is celebrated as a father of prophets and a friend of Allah (Khalilullah). This is a profound honor that no worldly wealth or power could ever match.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a powerful lesson for every believer: the most enduring legacy is not built with money, status, or material achievements, but with sincere faith and righteous deeds. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did not leave behind palaces or treasures; he left behind a legacy of submission to Allah, and Allah immortalized his name in the heavens and on earth.

Dear reader, ask yourself: What will people remember about you after you leave this world? If you strive to live a life of faith, honesty, kindness, and devotion to Allah, He may grant you a beautiful remembrance among people and, more importantly, His eternal pleasure. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him." (Muslim). So, invest in what truly lasts—your relationship with Allah and your service to His creation—and trust that Allah will honor you in ways you cannot imagine, just as He honored His friend Ibrahim.
